North Koreans skipped recent summit planning meeting with US: WH official

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that the June meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is moving forward as scheduled, despite growing concerns among White House officials and the president that the North Koreans could scuttle the summit.

Those concerns, according to a senior White House official, began about two weeks ago when a North Korean delegation failed to show up at a planning meeting for the summit with U.S. officials - although, according to the official, the U.S. will be sending a delegation back to Singapore later this week for yet another sit-down.

In testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee Wednesday, Secretary Pompeo said the summit is "still scheduled for June 12th," and put the burden on North Korea to show tangible steps towards ridding the country of its nuclear weapons before the U.S. makes any concessions.

"Our eyes are wide open to the lessons of history, but we're optimistic that we can achieve an outcome that will be great for the world," Pompeo said. "Our posture will not change until we see credible steps taken toward the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."

Pompeo's remarks came just a day after President Trump seemed to open the door to incremental concessions to North Korea in the event it started taking steps to denuclearize, appearing to back away from a demand that it happen immediately and completely.

"It would certainly be better if it were all in one. Does it have to be? I don't think I want to totally commit myself," Trump said before his meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

NK is rattling Trump. They want to see how much they can squeeze out of Trump. If they want to come, they could hold out until a few days before the summit and do an about-face again after making WH scrambling to cope. They do this all the time. Should not be taken in this way. If they do not come, it is their loss and blame is on them. They want us to bicker among ourselves, blaming each other.

Correct, TLR. That is my assessment, too. You have been through this too many cycles to be fooled by their bluffing and brinksmanship.

STAY THE COURSE, MR. PRESIDENT!

It is about at this point that Obama and Clinton administrations would panic, freak out and have diarrhea dribbling down their pant legs and rush a message off to Pyongyang to curry favor and get them back on track. A few more days of it and then George W. Bush, Condi and Chris Hill would cave, too.

Each administration has its limitation. One hopes the President does not go wobbly as Thatcher would say, but see this through to an equitable conclusion, if it means a cancelled meeting and a return to max pressure, so be it. It cannot be business as usual ANYMORE with those Norks. It is NOT in Washington's court, it is in Pyongyang's I don't think the USA will be so easily fooled this time.

I’m not in the least worried about Trump getting rattled. There are reports that Kim is getting second thoughts because he fears a coup while he’s in Singapore. That sounds much more likely. As for Trump, he knows you always have to be ready to walk, and he says so all the time.

If Kim decides to game this, Trump should just quietly walk away. Then, the first time that Kim launches a missle or tests a nuke Trump should put a cruise missle up his @$$...

"NK is rattling Trump."

It seems like it's pretty hard to rattle Trump - maybe he's just giving them enough rope to hang themselves.
They either come to the table, or they will starve (all of them, even the ruling class - sources say their treasury is empty by October).

Maybe it turned out that the meeting wasn’t safe for anyone involved. There’s still some bad players that possess dangerous power.

Come on? Why did the NORKS just blame Pence for this? They are clueless as how to proceed and win. They actually think the VP and Trump are going to fight. Trump will on the MarAlago golf course playing a round with him and say to Pence: “Good job drawing them out.” The NORKS are so stuck in their power structure they have no idea how the world works. They are a 1950’s nation. Stunted development. If Trump doesn’t beat them senseless in negotiations I will eat my mowing cap. (It is nasty)

It's a new USA for the NORKS and they're desperately flailing about for some kind of an angle to gain control of the pre-negotiations. They tried blaming the already-scheduled South Korean/USA naval exercises - fail. Then blaming Bolton - fail. Now they're trying to blame Pence - fail. Nothing in their pathetic little bag of tricks is working.

This is the same BS since 1952. We should have listened to MacArthur then and it is not too late to follow that advice now since that war is not officially over. Their game plan has always been, talk, promise agreement, stymie any progress, back off and then return right at point zero. Lastly, the Norks are China’s proxy in their plan to expand throughout SE Asia. Notice as we have been focused on Korean peace, they have been doing their own piece, piece of the Sprately Island for example.

I have no idea why the NORKS are saying what they are saying now but if you think NK is as what has been purposely portrayed you are highly naive. If you think there haven’t been other players besides Kim Jong-un running NK you are naive.

Oh I know there are other players. FIVEEYES for one. The dragon for another. It is just they are clueless how to deal with Trump. Fatty Boom Boom is caught in the middle. I am in no way naive. I know who are involved in this. Oops did your plane crash? No moves on Soros yet. Some moves on TCF.

“NK is rattling Trump. “

Hmmmm..no they aren’t. President Trump has proven time & again he doesn’t really get “rattled” based on his performance today.

IMO, the norks tried what worked on previous presidents & have barely begun to learn the lesson that President Trump isn’t anything at all like his predecessors.
