NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to take steps to curb ozone pollution that blows into New York and Connecticut from five other states.

The decision by U.S. District Judge John Koeltl in Manhattan is a victory for New York’s and Connecticut’s attorneys general, Barbara Underwood and George Jepsen.

Their offices sued EPA administrator Scott Pruitt in January, accusing him of ignoring his responsibilities under the federal Clean Air Act to reduce pollution.

Is this a back handed way to shut down coal production in West Virginia??

Because I am not sure how they plan on forcing those states to reduce smog from those states.

I am not sure smog comes from those states into New York and Connecticut.

I think Pennsylvania and West Virginia should pass legislation to order the wind to stop blowing into New York and Connecticut.

“As many as two in three New Yorkers are breathing unhealthy levels of smog,”

And how much of that is generated in NYC itself?

The whole article is hyperbolic. Even Pruitt said they should have plans on the table to combat the pollution and the judge merely states that he orders them to actually come up with a plan that Pruitt says is forthcoming...

Nothingburger and nothing but political kabuki theater who claim they’re fighting the good fight against Trump.

States like Pennsylvania and Virginia should pass laws forbidding acceptance of trash from New York and Connecticut which is now trucked to their landfills.

Around eight years ago, I spent an entire day reading up on the ‘footprint’ of unhealthy air generation in the US. Several think-tanks have gathered numbers and at the time....you could gaze through everything and come to two conclusions.

First, if you draw a fifty-mile circle around NY City, it would make up 90-percent of the pollution of the next 450 circle that you’d draw. The same basic story occurs with Connecticut.

Second, at that time (around 2008), a lot of this issue led back to coal-fired electric plants in both NY City and Connecticut. No one would say much about the level of filtering going on, or the efforts to fix the problem.

I am curious here how the judge intends to force the EPA to do anything. Maybe they could fix this by just turning off factory production and move these companies off-shore.

We tried and failed here in Ohio.

The law was struck down by a federal court as a restriction on interstate commerce.

New York trash has been filling up our landfills ever since.

We learned with bush and obozo that it is quite ok to ignore the law when it is immigration or drug enforcement in Colorado so this judge can bark at the moon and we don’t care..nobody cares about ozone. I thought everybody wanted to fill in the ozo
None hole over the polls. We need ozone to
Reduce sunburn.ignore this judicial dictator. Or just find a new judge. Scott Pruitt is so great!!

This will be overturned easily. It’s a violation of the origination clause and the separation of powers.

Connecticut did not have a whole lot of coal fired plants in 2008. Oil, natural gas and nukes are dominant.

I was mistaken about the oil (mind went back farther), but coal is only 14% of CT energy in 2008 ... probably less now.
