“We hope the school will learn that they need to be more sensitive to what students are dealing with and not make fun of them in what is supposed to be a safe environment."

A mother from Connecticut is shocked after her son was given the "ADD award" by his social studies teacher.

Tera Cooper first told NBC Connecticut her 13-year-old son was given a certificate by a teacher at Plainfield Central Middle School titled the #ADD award. The paper reads “Most likely to be distracted by…look something shiny!” with a zombie holding a balloon. The zombie is also holding a gold ribbon that says “good work.”

“He had tears in his eyes. He’s embarrassed because he had to accept it in front of his entire class,” Cooper told NBC Connecticut.

In an email exchange with Newsweek, Cooper said her son, who is in seventh grade, received the award on Friday, June 22 in his social studies class. She said her son went to take a nap when he returned from school, which was unusual for him. Cooper said she found the award along with several others from the teacher.

“As I was cleaning up the house I noticed the awards, he had three. That’s when I saw the #ADDaward I was shocked. I woke up him up and asked him off his teacher really gave this to him since her name was on it and he said yes. I immediately contacted the school via email and the principal set up a meeting the next day on a Saturday,” Cooper wrote to Newsweek.

This is very funny. Unless of course it's YOUR child that gets this award.

I went to a prep school in Connecticut in the ‘70s. That could have happened to me, if we had laser printers then.

The big question is....How can we blame this on Trump?

There is an important message in that that mom may have missed ... that son will not stay on task, is likely disruptive to others, and is not a joy to teach.

The school, as an institution, should do better to communicate the attention issues without humiliating the child, but the mom and the student also seem to have room for improvement. I hope all will take the opportunity to do so.

Good message... poor, poor communication vehicle.

Do this to a “gay” and hoo boy. The school would burn.

In order to be “fair”, I hope the teacher gave some kind of award to each of the other students.

Mainstream public school formats also aren’t for every child.

Kids can be so cruel. Will they ever let this boy forget it? It just hits me as a big whopping mistake, though the parents should probably take the hint that the mainstream public school system is not the place for him to be.

I got them all the time, typically in the form of a chalkboard eraser impacting my head.

My of my jr high math teachers was the worst and would nail me right on the nose at least once or twice a week for not paying attention

Note the “Blue Team” tag on the paper...

What was that supposed to mean?

Democrats? If so, that’s very inappropriate.

Hmm, could the story be deeper?

Could this be the complaint of the “blue team” that this kid isn’t listening to social studies lessons that are ridiculously biased?

I read, here I think, that some principal in New Yawk sent a lot of kids home with a letter stating that the only reason they were promoted to the next grade was because the school district didn’t have the money to send them to summer school. No wonder kids these days are shooting up their schools.

One ‘award’ like this may have been funny, but to receive three of them from the same teacher in one school year is significant.
It was needlessly humiliating for the student. Some kids would dish that disrespect right back to the teacher then and there.

Maybe that teacher is not the best one for him.
Some schools have a separate school program for kids who constantly interrupt the class.
Some female teachers have never been at ease with the typical behavior of boys in a classroom environment.

If my parents had found out a teacher placed her scabby, crusty, sweaty palms over my mouth in order to make me quiet down, they would have been quite upset, and demanded to meet with that teacher. Of course, that was in the old days.

Frustrated brilliance can often lead to behavior issues. Teacher, I got what you were taking 60 minutes to tell the class, in 60 seconds. Yes I’m bored!

If his condition is a problem it should be addressed by other means.

If not, in any class there is one student who concentrates the most on one just topic at a time and the one that is most distracted. Either trait is both a benefit and a curse. The ability to laugh at oneself is a good trait to develop and acquire. We, however, are focusing on developing uniform students with no outliers and snowflakes who only want praise.
