The Department of Justice is crafting a plan that would prohibit any migrant convicted of crossing the border illegally from receiving asylum, Vox reported Friday.
The plan, a copy of which was viewed by Vox, would also further restrict the ability of Central Americans to claim domestic or gang violence as a reason to request asylum.
One source told Vox that the proposed changes are "the most severe restrictions on asylum since at least 1965" and "possibly even further back" — 1965 is when current legal immigration law was passed.

Also need to bar asylum for anyone arriving from a country that is not on the government’s list of oppressive countries. Meaning anyone crossing from Mexico or Canada = no asylum. Same for all in bound flights or ships as we don’t have air or sea service to those countries either.

Those crossing illegally almost only claim asylum if they get caught.
It has been a get out of jail free card, with which they could avoid deportation - so now most who get caught claim asylum.
This is probably why VP Pence just went to Central America to talk to their leaders about immigration. This change (and General Sessions earlier ruling disallowing domestic or gang violence for asylum) is going to to significantly turn around the illegal immigrant flow from Central America. Especially women and children are going to be much less likely to get in. They need to get the word out down there.
