Academy Sports manager fired weeks after intercepting gun thief suspect in Florida store

A sporting goods store employee, who last month helped catch a suspect allegedly trying to swipe a weapon, was suspended and later lost his job at the Florida business following the incident, his lawyer said.

Dean Crouch, 32, was working at the Academy Sports store in Tallahassee on June 29 when robbery suspect Jason White allegedly tried to steal a gun, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.

After White reportedly tried to flee with the stolen firearm he’d requested to see, Crouch stepped in and ultimately detained him.

Crouch, an assistant manager at the store, was nearby when the incident occurred and heard employees yelling "stop that guy," his attorney, Ryan Hobbs, told Fox News. While police made their way to the scene, the suspect was relocated to an office at the business, he said.

Hobbs said the suspect had attempted to make off with a .40 caliber handgun and matching ammunition.

The Tallahassee Police Department, who arrested the suspect, wrote on Facebook that “employees detained a man who tried to run out of the store with a firearm, ammunition, and a backpack, which were stolen from the business.”

Fired for putting hands on a customer.

Is a thief considered a customer?

It’s a new deep discount marketing strategy. Instead of “buy one get one free” it’s “take one get one free”.

More concern about the thief suing. And if this occurred in New York, the liberal judge would have let the perp loose in the criminal case because the employee touched him, thus violating the criminal’s civil rights.

Back in the 80’s - would get fired as was contrary to insurance policy. Insurance would rather pay loss inventory than risk death or injury claim.

Worked retail back in the day

Academy Sports is being a a** instead of looking at each incident case to case instead of this zero policy crap. The manger probably stopped a violent crime from being committed from the perpetrator. If the guy did use the gun in a crime, the victims family would have sued Academy Sports of negligence letting the guy walked out the door with it and no one stopped him other then waiting on police to show up

“...the victim’s family would have sued Academy Sports for negligence letting the guy walk out the door...”

Academy Sports “response”: We’ll burn that bridge if we get to it...

Shame on you, Academy.

The suspect also robbed a Cash America Pawn shop earlier that day and stole 2 guns. The whole PC nonsense of Academy Sports is rubbish. May they circle the drain like Dick’s Sports for banning guns in their stores because they caved in to leftists.

Yep....that’s what the lawyers would think and say. Working in retail, I put my hands on a criminal as he was beating up a security guard(literally trying to bash the guy head into the concrete right outside the building)....I saved the guy’s life but academy sports would have probably tossed me too . I kept my job by the way and no complaints or review was needed and this was 6 years ago

Still true today, but the manager’s performance metrics probably has a shrink reduction number. So he loses either way and the store wins either way. More neo-feudalism.

Like Dicks, it’s time to boycott Academy. I still boycott auto zone for firing an employee who saw a robbery through the glass and retrieved a shotgun from his car and ended the threat. He too was fired. This was years ago.

I understand their concern about lawsuits, but I wonder if the Academy Sports Store (ASS) would face lawsuits if they let Mr. White (who isn’t) walk out with a gun, and then use it to kill a bunch of people?

Who is left?

Always patronize your friendly local gun store. There are plenty of them out there. They even exist in the People's Democratic Republic of New Jersey.
