Larry Kudlow: E.U. now backs Trump's trade fight with China
The Washington Times ^ | Thursday, July 26, 2018 | S.A. Miller

President Trump’s chief economic adviser said Thursday that European Union Commission President Jean Claude Juncker pledged to back the U.S. trade fight against China.

The commitment to take on China’s trade abuses was made as part of the breakthrough zero-tariff deal struck this week by Mr. Trump and Mr. Juncker, said Larry Kudlow, director of the president’s National Economic Council.

“The United States and the E.U. will be allies in the fight against China, which has broken the world trading system,” Mr. Kudlow said on Fox Business Network’s “Varney & Co.”

He said that China attempted to enlist the E.U. to oppose Mr. Trump’s get-tough trade policies but Mr. Juncker refused.

“Juncker made it very clear yesterday that he intended to help us [and] President Trump on the China problem,” he said.

The agreement to negotiate zero tariffs, zero barriers and zero subsidies on non-auto industrial goods avoided a full-fledged trade war. Mr. Trump pushed the E.U. to the brink of a trade war to get an agreement to level the playing field for U.S.-E.U. commerce.

Well, this is a very good sign when it comes to how to handle a nation that is seemingly convinced going rogue is it’s future.

Hopefully Trump has explained our view of China, and they have listened.

I’m not saying we need to cut off relations with China, but we need it to listen when it comes to the Spratley Island chain, and other issues.

There are three elements of ‘trade-force’ existing in Europe today. You’ve got the pro-China group (which tends to be anti-US). You’ve got the German group which wants all the cards in the deck to be shuffled and come up with German trade benefiting. Then you have elements within the EU apparatus which would like to find a level-handed way to curb Germany to some degree, limit Chinese products/steel, and to have an open door to the US.

If you look at the Japan ‘deal’ made two weeks ago....the EU removed 99-percent of tariffs (Japanese cars still face an EU tariff).

If Trump gets most of this, and they do actually build these natural gas ‘islands’ (off-the-coast) to handle the US ships delivering natural gas....then it’s all positive.

My derriere. The EU is stalling while they look for another way to rid themselves of our duly elected POTUS.

Pres. Tr,
don't trust the Canadians and don't trust Mexico!
Keep the tariffs on until they are crawling at our feet
and giving us what we demand! America has nothing to lose.

Maybe so, but they are going to have a very long wait for that to happen: 2024, probably!

China’s been bullying the rest of the world for 30 years, and we let them do it.

Huawei was so naked about intellectual property theft that they would simply write a check when challenged with a lawsuit.

They just wrote a check. No compunction at all. When asked for comment, their CEO said it was considered an R&D expenditure.

Of course. Considering all the other stuff they were getting by fiat, or outright theft, having to pay $150,000,000 for getting caught once was nothing.

Kick communist China out of the WTO!

They have proven that they won’t abide by the rules, won’t reform politically, and present a growing existential threat to Democracies.

Do you have a link regarding those “natural gas islands”?

Said islands could also be used by the Saudis and their allies to ship gas to Europe, which is a good thing. Yes, they’d be our competitors, but, I’ve been saying on FR for quite some time that this whole nonsense of starting a hideous proxy war in Syria is a blunder by fools: Use the money not spent there to ship gas by sea, and end run Russia and Iran. At this point, it’s highly doubtful ANY pipeline across Syria can be made secure in the next 10 years - more likely 20 or more.

The Euros have a LOT of complaints about the Chinese. It makes a great deal of sense for the US and the E.U. to cooperate here...

The ‘natural gas islands’ are simply the solution to ports being built to allow gas-tanker-ships to enter and ‘dump’ their cargo. Virtually every nation in Europe is hyper about allowing such ports to be modified to built for this....by legal means, the various Green Parties can turn this into a 20-year delay.

So what some nations have done (to a small extent) is create a floating dock...maybe five miles off the coast....maybe even further out, and then run a pipe to the shore. The ship arrives....off-loads the natural gas, and then leaves to return to the US.

The link: https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/25/europe-will-import-more-us-natural-gas-trump-and-juncker-say.html

My impression is that the Russians were set to make a fair amount of money off their deal (pipes already being built). So now, if the port or island deal occurs with the US-EU, then there’s competition and Russia probably makes less money (it’s probably not a terrible loss).

Note on this Russian pipe....it’s going through the Baltic Sea and avoiding any connection to the Middle East. By using the sea, they aren’t paying anyone for permission to allow the pipe to be there. You will see less and less natural gas pumped via Ukraine in the end.
