Irony alert: EPA finds ethanol is environmentally damaging
hotair.com ^ | 8/4/2018 | Jazz Shaw

Amid growing demands from the corn lobby that the government mandate even more ethanol be blended into the nation’s gasoline supplies, new finding call such proposals into question. One of the chief claims of the corn lobby is that ethanol is a more “green” type of energy because it’s renewable. From there, the argument is extended to claim that it’s better for the environment all the way around. But the conclusions of a study underlying the latest EPA report on the environmental impact of ethanol (seven years in the making, dating back well into the Obama administration) concludes that the opposite is true. Ethanol produces significant negative impacts on the environment, in some cases worse than the gasoline it’s supposed to be replacing.

So true. These are not new findings/ knowledge. I remember at least 15 years ago in college and during Congressional hearings on ethanol studies showing how detrimental it was.

Yeah. That came to mind. No ethanol in gasoline means cheaper steaks (which I can’t afford anymore). Doubtless it will make the price of gasoline go down, too. Now, if we could only get tetraethyl lead reintroduced . . .

I get really tired of the true fuel post when talking about getting rid of ethanol in our fuel.
Your intentions maybe good, but the timing sucks.

It destroys small engines..My Stihl dealer insists that his customers use Premium fuel, that has NO ethanol,

Yep - and unfortunately I have to drive nearly an hour to reach the nearest ethanol-free fuel location. Of course, there's always the "canned" small engine fuels that go for around $20 per gallon.

There's a federal standard for off-road and small engine fuel, currently called REC90. It's nearly impossible to find, though - even at marina fuel docks.

Is it true that Trump want expend this program?

If so then it just proves that sometimes Trump is LOW IQ himself.

The article makes a lot of good points. But it leaves out the fact that oil and gas is used to run all the equipment to produce Ethanol. Farm equipment, Stills, ect.

And what about the fact that it is all subsidized.

Ethanol in our gas is one of the stupid things ever done.

Farmers need to go back to growing food for people to eat.

A study in Canada came to that conclusion many years ago

Folks lets get beyond your feelings on the issue.

Ethanol is the cheapest, easy way to increase octane in our fuel. Now all here, I assume, understand octane and it’s role in engines, right...

There are multiple octane levels available in ethanol-free gasoline, too - so that is a secondary factor. Primarily, ethanol is used as an oxygenate in gasoline - an oxygen-bearing liquid that promotes more complete fuel combustion (in order to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide produced).

This goes all the way back to the big-city smog issues that brought about catalytic converters. Look at the pure-gas website and try to find non-oxygenated fuel in any high-population density area. Often you have to drive a long distance to get out of a metro area's "population bubble", before you can find ethanol-free fuel for sale. Inside the "bubble", you're outta luck.

I have a friend who owns/runs a small engine repair shop. He freely admits his business is much better off because of ethanol. It really wears on engines, especially small engines like lawn mowers, boat engines, chain saws, etc.

I vote we dump ethanol all together. It was a money thing from the get go masquerading as a “clean” solution. BS!

The only problem is alcohol is a big source of smog. Big enough that they demanded it be taken out of windshield washer fluid.

So it’s great for gasoline, which causes nothing but problems, but bad for other purposes where it might actually be helpful.

The envirowhackos will fight you tooth and nail to keep it. You’ll never ever get a liberal to admit they’re wrong.

Well . . . Duh!

Anyone who has had an engine ruined by gasohol knows it’s not good for the environment.

Straight gas is cheaper and more efficient.

“The bigger surprise is the fact that ethanol production and combustion significantly increases the production of nitrous oxides (Nox).”

Surprise? This has been known since the beginning of the alcohol fad.

Try finding a station without ethanol. I see 23 total in California.

Ethanol needs to be outlawed.

We already tried that. Prohibition did not work.

Very close to 300,000 miles on a vehicle here with ethanol in regular unleaded running through it since the middle of the 1990s. No problems—not even a fuel system component. Not even a fuel filter. The vehicle runs like a scalded dog and will outrun most other vehicles on the roads.

Ran a cheap, Chinese generator for thousands of hours on regular unleaded gas so far. Recently looked at the valves and seats while doing the periodical valve adjustment (solid lifters). They’re fine, just like new.
