At a conference examining Californias housing crisis, one of the more liberal audience members expressed her frustration at those of us who even talked about free markets. I dont recall her exact words, but the mere mention of such ideas were a non-starter. Apparently, such notions shouldnt be raised in polite company given what they mean for the poor and disenfranchised. Couldnt we just get back to discussing government regulations and programs?
That comment summarized the problem with discussing public policy in a state where such ideas are considered arcane. The notion that people should be free to pursue their own lives, with only minimal interference and subsidy from the government, is never on the table. The assumption, in the Legislature, among policymakers and in local government, is that private actors would leave a path of death and destruction if the government didnt try to manage everything.
That the government itself always leaves destruction in its wake not only within its own bureaucracies but within the industries it controls simply is more evidence that government needs even more power. Were free to talk about tweaking current rules and regulations, but never to propose reducing or eliminating them. Government knows best, even when government employees are caught repeatedly enriching themselves at our expense.

I wonder if he meant ‘archaic’ instead of ‘arcane’.

Maybe California would not have a housing crisis if they had not allowed a million acres of trees to burn this year.
Forest mismanagement has consequences. Namely, the trees that could have been harvested for housing lumber are now toast.
No one should feel sorry for the stupid Californians who implement stupid policies that negatively impact them.
By the way I am hearing too many stories from my leftist friends and relatives about the high cost of housing. Well, if these leftists stopped illegals from crossing the border and returned to sane forest management, the cost of housing would drop.
‘Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose’ - Janis Joplin.
Deport all those illegals and there wouldn’t be a housing crises, prices would come down and they’d have enough water to drink, water their lawns and fill their pools.
Stop spewing racial hatred right now! And homophobia, too!
At least government isn’t in charge of our healthcare system... oh wait ... never mind.
I'll never forget, I had a very cool High School History teacher who added an extra credit question to an exam Who said Freedom's Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose?
Some of us wrote Janis Joplin and got the 3 points credit for it.One girl's answer was Kris Kristofferson and he gave her 5 points credit because she outsmarted him as he had Janis in mind when he thought of the question but couldn't not recognize how that was the more correct answer.
I’m actually baffled why folks around here think there’s a “Housing Crisis”.
We have a “Bum Crisis”.
Even if free housing was offered to them, they’d tear it to the ground in mere months, buy a bottle and head to the river.
Oh, let’s add the fact we ALSO have a State Hospital Crisis. They’re empty and/or re-purposed. And they used to hold all the nuts/lunatics and incorrigible drunks.
And THAT ladies and gentlemen is the “crisis”.
“arcane” seems to be a good fit...the ideas aren’t just old/primitive, they are actually hard to be understood as being valid by normal thinkers.
