The gunman who opened fire on a "Madden NFL 19" tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday was hospitalized previously for mental illness, according to court records.

Divorce filings from the parents of 24-year-old David Katz of Baltimore showed that as a teenager he was hospitalized twice in psychiatric facilities and was prescribed anti-psychotic and anti-depressant medications, The Associated Press first reported Monday.

Katz, a competitor at the gaming event, had two handguns and extra ammunition inside the restaurant where the competition was taking place, officials said at a news conference Monday afternoon.

No hoops to jump through buying weapons as a diagnosed mental case?

It's not an easy situation. The Founding Fathers were talking about sane people in the 2nd Amendment and it should be a difficult process to have someone's 2nd Amendment rights stripped, and it should be a difficult process to have them restored. I don't want someone sent to a mental hospital and stripped of their rights just because the liberal next door says he's insane.

Both his folks worked for Fedgov agencies, neither of which were FBI...can’t recall what they were though...saw it in an earlier thread but I’m so busy at work my memory is failing me at the moment.

Perfect cover for CIA-domestic....

Perhaps with a tin-foil hat on?

***And he purchased the guns legally. ***

Where? Maryland has some tough handgun laws.

If he had been previously described anti-psychotic medications, he had serious problems and needed ongoing serious help - and no guns.

many teens are prescribed anti psychotics for a brief period. Adults too, for often the psychosis is caused by not being able to sleep for a long period of time. think a week or two.

In most states one does not lose one’s gun rights unless one is COMMITTED to a psychiatric facility. Not because one is admitted.

if he was not legally committed he does not lose gun rights. many people are admitted to psych hospitals. Few are committed.

Per the article:

Katz legally purchased his firearms — .45 caliber and 9mm
handguns — in Baltimore, Maryland, Jacksonville Sheriff Mike
Williams told reporters. He bought them within the past month
from a licensed dealer, officials said.

The question is only there to produce a perjury offense if NICS has information to the contrary. He lied, and NICS didn’t know any different.

Anti-psychotics are not innocuous drugs, and I personally think they are way overused for purposes that they were not meant to be used for. For instance, giving Haldol to agitated elderly patients in the hospital. It makes life easier for the staff, but in my opinion it is never good to play with brain chemistry if unnecessary, particularly if it’s just to quiet someone down.

I am with you in being careful not to take away someone’s rights without a very, very good reason. It was mentioned, however, that he had been diagnosed as schizophrenic. If that diagnosis was verified and corroborated correct, that would be an instance in which I would be fully in support of taking away his rights to a gun. That said, I think all serious mental health diagnoses need to be verified by multiple independent people. It’s way too easy to make mistakes and label someone with a diagnosis they don’t have. That’s very tragic.

Good grief! If we are going to have background checks, why isn’t history of mental illness (or lack of) one of the first things required to be in the database?

Privacy concerns? Worries that such screenings could turn political?
