#ThisIsOurLane: Doctors hit back at pro-gun group NRA
BBC News ^ | 11/12/2018

When America's powerful pro-gun group told doctors to mind their own business, the response was swift, furious and viral.

"Unless you've had someone's heart stop beating in your hands, you don't get to tell those of us who have what is and is not our 'lane'," trauma surgeon David Morris, 42, told the BBC.

The National Rifle Association's tweet on Wednesday sparked anger.

It came just hours before a gunman killed 12 people in a California bar.

"Someone should tell self-important anti-gun doctors to stay in their lane," the NRA tweeted.

And then wait a year till your malignant melanoma can be seen... some folks really specialize in cutting off their noses to spite their faces. This is not a way to conduct a sane discussion.

Dear Doc: My chances of ending up on your table are greatly reduced by my 2nd Amendment Rights.

Interesting that it was doctors that allowed the massacre to happen.

In WA, Seattle, the local city council wanted signs in gun shops stating how dangerous guns are, etc.

These certain liberal doctors can get off their high horses now and shut up too. The power they have to kill people is far greater than any gun owner.

“Doctors might ask, okay gun nuts, let 90% of us quit. Now do you want that world.”

You could say that about many different professions.

This response is due to Obamacare.....and just hard core Leftist Doctors. Period. They have no more right to comment of guns than did my Sunday School teachers.

Ban Motor Vehicles and Swimming Pools.

We won’t need as many Doctors.

Society is an interdependent entity. Change one thing and there are many knock-on consequences.

The “lane” talk encourages selfish wrongheadedness. Arms and doctors should be appreciated by all for what God appointed them to be.

My tagline indicates where I am on the 2nd Amendment - with no compromises.

That said (and meant), I think that our side needs to learn a LOT more about PR, so as to have a greater chance to stop lousy legislation and regulations, and then to reverse the incredible damage inflicted upon our RKBA since 1934.

That statement by the NRA was a quick, obviously not well thought-out, reaction. We need to be smarter than that. If you come up with a soundbite in a few seconds, then the other side can do the same.

We need to understand the perspective of doctors - which generally speaking (I’m not including abortion docs) consists of “let’s do what we can to reduce illness, injuries and death - that’s our job.” The clear response for our side - which, btw, ALSO wants to reduce illness, injuries and death (we’re decent humans ALSO) - is that the doctors need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture than just their ERs. The history of the 20th Century is on our side, IMHO, in that tyrannical regimes that highly regulated or outright banned firearms for ordinary citizens ended up murdering somewhere well north of 100 million people. Compared to ordinary street crime - as bad as that is - this is probably 100 times worse. We should be smart and congratulate docs for good-heartedly wanting to reduce suffering, while simultaneously letting these generally very smart people know that they don’t have a monopoly on either knowledge or reasoning abilities.

Geez, folks, we have a winning argument - why would we want to dilute or kill it off for the sake of a quick one-liner?

The mistakes go along with the successes.

I daresay many more doctor visits happen in the land than shootings, to good or ill.

Thanks for noticing that.

If we believe we have the best considered view on matters social, we should use enough words to make that view plain.

Hopefully we will see those “professional medical panelists” hanging from lampposts. They were incapable of pulling the trigger, so to speak.

Guns are used 2.5 million times per year to stop crimes like robbery, rape and murder, 98% of the time without a shot being fired.

But evidently doctors don’t care about the lives of innocent people saved by guns, just as they don’t care about the 1,000,000 innocents murdered each year in the holy name of “choice.”

Dear deadhead doctors,
The “n.r.a.” is not a business organization you can arbitrarily ‘shut down’.

There as many members, as there are citizens who do not belong to any gun groups.
The 2nd Amendment is not up for legislative abbility any more than the Hippocratic Oath is.

There are excellent arguments for liberal self defense policies. And doctors surely can follow them once they are explained. In medical school students have to follow complex interdependencies in biology.

Seriously.. Doctors and medical staff are the 3rd (might be higher) Biggest cause of death in America. They screw up and kill or damage people more than anyone even knows! And they get away with it!

My primary care doctor, a female, knows I carry. I do not think her male PA knows but I never see him. Her female PA, aka my sports doc, not only knows I carry nut says she feels safer when I am in the office because she knows I take classes and practice.
