SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has tested a new tactical weapon, the North’s official news media said on Friday, reporting that Kim Jong-un witnessed the event in his first publicized visit to a weapons test site since the country test-launched its intercontinental ballistic missile last November.

State media did not identify the weapon, and the test did not appear to violate the voluntary moratorium North Korea imposed on nuclear and long-range ballistic missile tests this year. Still, Mr. Kim’s renewed activities at weapons test sites could complicate the already stalled talks between North Korea and the United States over how to remove the North’s nuclear weapons.

North Korea tends to use the prospects of rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula as leverage when negotiations with Washington do not go in its favor. In recent weeks, it has issued vague threats that it might resume testing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles should the United States continue to refuse to make concessions like easing sanctions.

On Friday, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said Mr. Kim visited the testing ground of the Academy of Defense Science, the center of weapons development in North Korea, and “supervised a newly developed ultramodern tactical weapon test"

Take articles like that one from oligarch-sponsored propaganda companies like the New York Times with a big grain of salt. They’re pecking away at your minds.

Do you really believe that Secretary Mike P. blindly trusts anyone? That’s highly unlikely, and his Dept. doesn’t work in isolation. Neither does the Pres.

Pompeo actually strikes me as somewhat naive. I’ve watched him. At least his behavior and watching the Norks publicly yeah mercilessly and embarrassingly jack him around and his demeanor in Pyongyang on visits there spoke to me of an unfamiliarity with Asia at a deep level and particularly vis a vis DPRK. Bolton much better suited to not take crap or be fooled, anyways this pathetic and painful to watch house of cards charade is collapsing—of thinking the Kim regime would (ever) give up nukes freely and come clean, over mere optics and niceties and photo ops in Singapore. I gave it six months on FR and it seems to be on course. Privately, people in the Administration admit it’s not going anywhere. I don’t fall for the beltway soon and DC optics.

But Pompeo doesn't do the negotiating, either. He's a manager. He provides briefings.

"Bolton much better suited to not take crap or be fooled,..."

As for Bolton, he's the National Security Advisor. Bolton's alright, though, come to think of it. He still stands by the decision to go to war in Iraq and military action and regime change in Syria, Iran and Libya. He wants a tougher position against Russia and China...

Hmmm. Maybe you're right! Maybe Bolton would be a great secretary of state!    ;-D

More than a silly wrist rocket, bud, I’m sorry to say. Internal reports are emerging from South Korean intelligence, and Japan intelligence this was a KN-series rocket (not sure, KN-8, or what, just a missile engine test or what).
