My great grandfather an grandmother came to the US in 1902 from Vastervik. He had $25 in his pocket by the time he reached the small town in Iowa where he is buried today.
He laid bricks, dug wells, worked in the coal mines and other hard work and lived to be 92.
He had been a sharecropper in Sweden. He made his own way and kept the fruits of his labor in the USA...

Those battle scenes really get to me. I’ve re-enacted 17th Century pike and musket tactics, worn that kind of armor, trailed and pushed pike, fired matchlock muskets by volley, even fenced with pike, tuck, and musket butt (though without sharp points, thank God). I can FEEL how those troops felt, just a little, facing each other at such close range.

Well, first, the scimitar came in with the Turks; second, Damascus steel was very, very expensive, so not all Mohamedan warriors would have had a sword made of Damascus; third, some of the Vikings carried swords made of patterned welded steel (as rare and as expensive as Damascus), which were every bit as tough and flexible as Damascus (Wootz) swords, or as the famed Japanese katanas, for that matter.
