The ministry, which did not specify which flights had been threatened, added that Syrian air defenses had destroyed 14 of 16 Israeli missiles launched by six F-16 jets against unspecified targets near Damascus on Tuesday. Provocative acts by the Israeli Air Force endangered two passenger jets when six of their F-16s carried out airstrikes on Syria from Lebanese airspac, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement carried by the Russia Today news outlet.

Newsweek is not a credible news source.
If you’re flying commercial airlines in a warzone, then taking some incoming shouldn’t surprise you.
Russia’s the one who should be careful. Israel would show the world how ineffective the Russian military is.
Correction: a U.S. Defense Dept. official said that Israel hit some Hezbollah arms depots around Damascus. That report did not come from Israel.
Can you just feel that hook being set in the bear’s jaw? Come and get it, Putin.

Yep, which is the main reason the Russians cringe whenever Israel strikes Syria it shows Russian equipment to be clearly inferior. And has for decades.

Yup - like I sez if their commercial airline really almost got caught in the line of fire, they shouldn’t be flying them in the area.
Besides, from KAL Flight 007 to Malaysia Airlines MH17, they don’t have much virtue to preach from re:taking down passenger planes to begin with.
But it’s just as likely they’re claiming victimhood solely as an attack on Israel.
I bet so. They were oppressing everyone around them.
A headline from Iran’s PressTV:
“Israel to sign own death warrant by attacking Syria”
A headline from the Jerusalem Post
in Israel:
“Netanyahu: We stand firm against Iran in Syria despite Trump’s decision”
How much rah rah rah yay Israel would there be around here if they had greased a civilian passenger jet on Christmas? Understanding that it is a congested region with many flights at any given time, it is entirely unrealistic and asisine to say that anyone getting on a civilian passenger plane nearly anywhere in the ME, northwestern Africa or the western med should plan on potentially being shot at by Israel.
There is a post here at FR about an Iranian airliner being used to fly military equipment into Damascus for Hezbollah.
Yes. They were Iranian Chrstian Hezbollah charity administrators visiting to start a baby milk factory for church refugee children.
How’s that? Will it get me in good with Putin’s little elves here? ;-)
I think this is what POTUS meant when he said other folks can fight in Syria, meaning Israel.
Get used to it Pootie. Without US troops Bibi is going to give his pilots a lot of target practice
“Do you believe the Israelis or the Russians?”
Nyet on the Russkies!
“How much rah rah rah yay Israel would there be around here if they had greased a civilian passenger jet on Christmas?”
Except it was a military flight from Tehran. Should have been shot down on the Tehran tarmac. You disagree? You support the IRG invading Syria, as well as South America, exporting jihad? Working with Hezbollah and Hamas to exterminate Israel and to blow up NYC?
“Report: Hezbollah officials hit in Israeli strike near Damascus
Ynet, Associated Press ^ | December 26, 2018 | Ynet, Associated Press
As in previous reports of attacks in Syria, this attack is also connected to an Iranian plane. On Tuesday morning, the Boeing 747 of Iranian airline Fars Air Qeshm, which is affiliated with the Revolutionary Guards, took off from Tehran International Airport (THR) to Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA). At 5:30pm, the plane took off for Damascus International Airport where it landed shortly after 7:45 pm. The plane was apparently used to transport military equipment to the Syrian army and Hezbollah....
...The source also said one of the main targets of IDF bombing was Iranian shipments of advanced GPS components meant to help Hezbollah convert its arsenal of unguided rockets into precision-guided missiles, thereby increasing the threat to Israel.
