Am I the only one who thought there might have been a back room deal for Russia to help stabilize the Syria against Iran if the U.S. got out and stopped trying for Assad?

Probably not far off that mark. Russia knows that Iran, as long as the mullahs are in control are a bigger threat to the southern regions than Syria is, but a bigger foothold in the ME by Iran, threatens to destabilize the entire area, and Israel has shown in the past, they are not really concerned about borders if they feel threatened.

You can bet there is a lot of 'back-channel' talking going on from the Sauds, US, Israel, Russia and the Syrians.

Really I think we need to start a random mid-east bombing program. Just dispense with excuses or reasons. Just pick a random group, nation, or city and occasionally drop a load. Realistically, we will never be wrong.

I’m thinking Russia now sees Iran as a regional competitor.

In fact Iran never supported any Russia’s enemies in relatively modern history.
Although neither Syria nor Russia want them since ISIS and US out. They are of no use anymore.

Maybe things are returning back to normal in Syria. I don’t think Iran was in Syria before before ISIS existed. Russia maybe telling them “it’s time for you to go”.

I would like to see other sources reporting on this....we shall see but I wouldn’t be surprised if true. Lots of deals happening to allow Russia to clean up Syria now....and Putin is supporting Assads troops to control the North. Interesting seeing how this is playing out.

Note that Netanyahu and Putin have scheduled yet another meeting for Feb 21 in Moscow. They’re saying up front that the subject is Iran.

Also note that the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset is the son of Russian Christians, Yuli Edelstein. He’s also the #2 guy in the Likud.
