Widespread National Food Stamp Fraud Totals at Least $1 Billion, Could Be as High as $4.7 Billion

Shortened title.

Full title: Report: Widespread National Food Stamp Fraud Totals at Least $1 Billion, Could Be as High as $4.7 Billion

According to a new report produced by the Government and Accountability Office (GAO), at least $1 billion in food stamp benefits are "trafficked annually," meaning they are fraudulently used. The extent of the fraud is uncertain, the GAO warns, estimating the abuse of the program could be as high as $4.7 billion.

About 20 million lower-income households receive benefits from the $64 billion Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, to buy food. But GAO found that instead of being used for food, many stores are defrauding the program by "selling" cash instead of food.

"For example, a store might give a person $50 in exchange for $100 in benefits – then pocket the difference," GAO explains.

The Food Nutrition Service (FNS) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture oversees SNAP and is responsible for authorizing and overseeing retailers.

The Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008 gave the USDA the authority to strengthen penalties for retailers that commit fraud, but as of November 2018, FNS had not done so.

Getting all the muslins off food stamps would probably pay for half the Wall.

When 50 million illegals start hitting up our welfare and food stamp programs, we will be looking back at this time as the good all days. $5 billion in fraud? That will be a drop in the bucket unless we secure our borders.

They should end food stamps and have the people go to the government warehouses to pick up their food - processed cheese and powdered milk.

This story has a long history.

Refer to Economic and Policy Weekly, December 30, 1995, page A-159. The article is published as follows: Logan, S H and DB DeLoach (1977): The Food Stamp Programme: Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, California Division of Agricultural Sciences, University of California, Davis, Bulletin 860

Fraud goes with the USDA’s Food Stamp program.

This is just Food Stamps.

Add in the fraud in Medicare/Medicaid, SS Disability, EPA, FDA, USDA, DOD and gov grants, and we’d easily fund an effective, animal-friendly barrier, with active deterence/defense, from shore to shore.

Many use their cards to buy food and then once out the door exchange the food for drugs, booze, and cigarettes. No food for the children.

I consider it fraud if anyone is capable of working but doesn’t and then gets food stamps.

Plus rice and beans. Anyone could eat that and survive off it indefinitely.

Do we still have any work requirements, that able bodied people on public assistance are required to seek work? Or is that concept gone? Wasn’t that part of welfare reform back in the ‘90s, which Clinton claimed credit for? Has that unraveled?

Bingo!

The corporate welfare receivers don’t care if the average American is defrauded as long as they are getting theirs.

The amount of money that could be saved by evicting citizens of other countries who are in our country illegally would pay for a wall on BOTH borders.

“They should end food stamps and have the people go to the government warehouses to pick up their food - processed cheese and powdered milk.”

I have been saying that for years, though I might be a little better with the choices basic meat, eggs, milk, vegatables, fruits and grains. No snacks and no @&*^# soda only redeemable at a govt maket. Would save 10 billion a year in fraud, and wasted money on krap food not to mention the hundred billion a year wasted on obesity and diabetes treatments.

Democrats would fight it tooth and nail claiming it is inhumane and undignifed (though half the worlds population would kill for free krap like that, though in reality like everything else democrats fight for it would actually be because their cronies and lobbyists, and wealthy donors (mostly all the same thing) would be losing money
