THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

HAROLD ARLEN

COTTON CLUB PARADE OF 1933: ”STORMY WEATHER”

Frank recorded this song three times during his long career. This is early Frankie in the Axel Stordahl era from 1945.

Frank Sinatra: “Stormy Weather” (1945)

Gordon Jenkins was Frank’s arranger in this downbeat 1959 version.

Frank Sinatra: “Stormy Weather” (1959)

This is from Frank’s last album in 1984 where he worked with Quincy Jones.

Working went well but boy I do get worn out even taking it easy.
So I continue to do little and just to help.

Even Billie Holiday respected her chops, calling her “the best white blues singer in the game.” This is from 1946.

Billie had her own very raw take on the song. This 1952 recording is one of the best known due to Lady Day’s vocal work. It’s a world weary take, and she is backed by some of the best sidemen in jazz.

He was a giant of jazz piano, and this recording from the early 1950s is a real gem.
