More than 34,000 Illinoisans have lost their right to own a gun. Nearly 80% may still be armed.

As many as 30,000 guns may still be in the possession of Illinois residents deemed too dangerous to have them, according to a Tribune investigation.

In an analysis of data released for the first time, the Tribune found the state has repeatedly failed to ensure that people surrender their weapons and gun permits after their Firearm Owner’s Identification cards are revoked, resulting in the breakdown of a system put in place to deter gun violence.

In all, nearly 27,000 Illinois residents over the past four years have not informed authorities what they did with their guns after state police stripped their licenses, according to the analysis. That means law enforcement has no idea whether 78% of revoked cardholders since 2015 still possess guns.

The uncertainty has created a public safety risk that has been compounded for decades by antiquated policies and limited law-enforcement resources.

Among those with dismal compliance rates are residents convicted of domestic violence or people who had their cards rescinded because of mental health concerns, the Tribune analysis shows. About 3 out of 4 such revokees failed to tell the state where their weapons are, despite making a combined 5,000 serious inquiries about purchasing guns before the revocation.

Consider the problem. 34,000 gun owners who went to the trouble to get a gun legally in Illinois. If you’re willing to go to through the process that implies that A. you have a need to have a gun and B. your not giving it up just because the state legislature says so, or there’s a knock at the door to actually collect it. A significant percentage are going to say that the gun was lost or stolen. A very small percent may open fire. Either way it’s a fool’s errand for law enforcement to go round knocking on doors.

Yeah, well, the *deemed too dangerous to have one* can be a pretty subjective criteria.

Unless one has a history of gun related crimes or known to have a sadistic streak and tortures animals, etc, then I don't trust the gun grabbing government's judgment of who is or is not *too dangerous* to have one.

Especially in light of red flag laws.

How many people who never bothered to get a permission card in the first place have guns anyway?

For those of you who don’t know, in Illinois, one must get permission from the state government to exercise one’s 2nd Amendment rights. Before one can legally own or purchase a firearm one must first obtain a Firearms Owner’s Identification (FOID) card. The irony is, that as a Missouri resident, I don’t have to produce a FOID card to purchase ammunition or a long gun, but an Illinois resident does.

Good. Remember that, politicians!

They want to take guns from honest, non-violent citizens and deliberately and intentionally leave them in the hands of violent criminals, so they can waltz right in and take what is ‘rightfully’ theirs from their ‘oppressors’.

LOL….send the judges and politicians to these homes to take the guns from crazy people. It’s easy to write a law and then expect someone else to enforce it.
