The shadow of age bias in hiring, though, is long. Tens of thousands of workers say that even with the right qualifications for a job, they are repeatedly turned away because they are over 50, or even 40, and considered too old.

These are the same people that support “child labor laws”, “living wages”, unions, the EPA and impossible OSHA regulations.
There’s ageism to be sure but -
“I ace the phone interviews, Mr. Adair said. They say: Your résumé speaks volumes. You could hit the ground running. It looks like youre the perfect fit.
But you come in, and youre D.O.A., said Mr. Adair, who is 71 and has neatly clipped gray hair. You can see the look in their eyes.
71 and put in charge of a 2-3 year project? Will he live that long? Or as a salesman - would he be able to physically compete?
As a former HR Director (Following my Army Service) I find that interesting. Depending on the Job, older people are more reliable in term of attendance and retention. Younger workers have priorities outside the workplace that contribute to absenteeism and are more likely to move from job to job. If anything, I leaned towards the older workers when hiring.
The struggle is real.
I didn’t notice much of a problem in my 50s, but once I hit 60, a certain amount of snide crap started creeping into conversations. I still need a few more years in harness before I can even think about retiring, but keeping my current job may be a close-run thing.
Folks, the data the article hangs its hat on is provided by the Urban Institute and Pro Publica.
Nuff said.
So why is the NYT trying to convince folks in this age group the end is nigh...?
Old Farts Unite!
This is true out here. I have sons and they are over 40... one is a lawyer with high credentials and the other is an engineer with many years with GE and Verizon.. both are being replaced with women. .. it’s a woman’s world out there. My lawyer son said if he was a transgender, he’d be top in the work place... he has been in copyrights and patents in the pharmaceutical field.. in the US and in the UK... keeps track world wide.. and he trained the woman who took the position he would have... his years of experience means nothing.
And Verizon has gone through letting all their employees go... every six months for 2-3 years, until there is no one left who used to work there, including the managers and bosses.. they hired younger at less pay.
That is what is going on out there in the work place. Weird decisions by men who are trying to please the women and don’t know their head from their you know what. Sears going bust is another example of poor management...I could have done a better job keeping that company afloat than the ones in charge did.
This isnt new. Been going on for scores of years
The problem is real. In IT one ages out in their thirties.
It is the result of many factors including the availability of both legal and illegal younger workers and the need to fill diversity quotas with non-whites.
In IT one ages out in their thirties. In IT and other STEM field one competes with illegals (visa overstays). To challenge their status is racist, and since they do not carry a full load of US taxes due to loop holes they are damn cheap.
Re: This isnt new. Been going on for scores of years
Amen
By raising the minimum hourly rate, they are pushing many middle-aged and elderly people out of the workforce. Keep your stupid hands off legitimate transactions between individual and/or businesses.
Try and get a job in Silicon Valley if youre over 40.....very tough
Older workers are avoided like the plague because of medical costs, they are more likely to come down with something that will cost 100’s of 1,000’s.
Ditto for hiring women, they are cost you big time in medical costs because they go to the doctor use medical leave so much.
The employer mandate in ObamaCare made it inordinately expensive to employ anyone over the age of 40.
Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Most companies simply ignore resumes over a certain age. Some only hire interns as a rule, and make the rare exception when they need an experienced person to herd the cats.
Even when you are hired over 40, you are yesterday’s news. They coo over everything the twenty-somethings do, like a new parent so proud of a newborn’s first diaper. Meanwhile, a 50 year old could walk in with a working fusion reactor and be greeted with, “It took you long enough!”
Pro Publica or any survey or polling firm can cherry pick employers who discriminate against the old, the fat, the ugly, those with low self esteem.
There are also firms who discriminate in favor of those passed over by others because they know there are good employees and self esteem is not a requirement for every job.
The trick is for those who seek employment to find the niche for them. Few are working for all employers. We seek to work for one employer and the trick is to find that employer.
I see a large IT firm hiring many employees right now. It has taken them a full year to staff up to 50 and they haven’t started to hire some skill sets, such as QA/tester.
Most of the Americans they have hired have been older. The immigrants they hire are a mix of old and young.
Their problem is finding people who are qualified.
In IT one ages out in their thirties?
I’m 75. See my post. I see plenty of older workers being hired in IT.
