OREGON DEMOCRAT LEGISLATORS TO OREGON BUSINESSES: “LET ‘EM LEAVE!”
Cascade Policy Institute ^ | June 24, 2019 | Eric Fruits

“Let ’em leave. Someone else’ll come in.” That was Oregon state senator James Manning’s response when told that new business taxes will cause some firms to leave the state.

Unfortunately, the senator is not alone with the let-them-leave attitude. That seems to be the attitude of the supermajority in the legislature as well as the city of Portland, who have both recently passed massive business taxes.

The legislature just passed a billion dollar a year “corporate activities tax.” The new tax is triggered once a business hits one million dollars in sales. This may seem like a lot to a legislator; but many small businesses such as restaurants, retailers, and consulting firms can easily generate a million dollars in sales. In fact, the Census Bureau reports about a quarter of Oregon employers have sales of a million or more a year. Thousands small firms will be subject to thousands of dollars in new sales taxes on top the income taxes they already pay.

A million a year in gross sales is nothing when you profit margin is 3%.

Neah.
New businesses won’t come in, because startup costs are becoming prohibitive.
But existing business may expand to fill any niches that remain profitable and pass the increased costs to the customers.
Remember businesses, esp. corporations, don’t pay taxes. They collect taxes from their customers.

Arrogant politicians, who see their own power as the ultimate arbiter of everything they decide and do. More taxes = more money for them = a greater ability to buy votes and stay in power = perpetuation of their stature and lifestyle and the ability to enrich themselves. It’s such a huge difference and distance from their entirely erroneous designation as public ‘servants’.

As I always ask in my commie town (olympia, wa) - after all the businesses are taxed out, and the property owners likewise, who will pay for your massive government?

To use a tired cliche- do the math.

Oh, they pay taxes alright How nice it would be for them if every expense, including taxes, could just easily be “passed on to customers” It doesn’t usually work that way

What will happen is, some will move, some will shift resources while maintaining a presence, others won’t consider Oregon in the first place, nor shift resources there

This Manning cat is a real fool. But not surprising.

“Oregon state senator James Manning”

This wingnut has never had a job other than GubMint.

What the H-E-*-* does he know about job creation or business development?

His specialty is mooching from the producers.

Doesn't matter, magic mushrooms and pot are both legal now so the only thing most of the people who elected the idiots who think like this Senator will care about is cleaning up when they realize they've been sitting in their own chit for six hours.

Oh, there may be somewhat of a backlash when people have to drive a long way to get stuff to deal with their attack of the munchies, but before long they're just order their favorites by the case lot from Amazon and won't care that the places they used to purchase from are gone.

Whatever you tax you get less of.

Whatever you subsidize you get more of.

Let’s tax liberals and subsidize conservatives..............
