About 12,000 customers are without electricity in Madison, Wisconsin, during a dangerous heat wave, after fires at two downtown substations, according to local officials.
An explosion and a fire occurred early Friday morning at a substation jointly owned by Madison Gas and Electric and the American Transmission Company, MG&E CEO Jeff Keebler told reporters at a news conference.

Heres hoping it doesnt cascade and result in expanding outages.
Meanwhile Berkley CA has banned Natural Gas in new homes and demanded they use all electric. Maybe some more electric cars will help the situation.
Madison is hell bent on becoming Venezuela 2.0.
TWO different areas hit at about the same time this morning, though MG&E Techs were fiddling with something at the time. It’s really, REALLY hot here today - elderly, kids and pets will be effected, for sure. Everybody in the stock tank! ;)
Dane County Regional Airport is also effected, and that’ll suck for those flying to EAA this weekend!
Local coverage:
We should look forward to heat waves and lament that we are destroying the planet with air conditioning. Heat waves are mother nature’s way of culling the weak. (I don’t believe it, but expect to hear it from Rachel Madcow on MSNBC or one of its other enviro idiots.
Too many people plugging in their Tesla’s at the same time?
Ask any Democrat. Electricity is magicked into existence, so this must be Trump’s fault. He’s attacking Woke Madison.
Is it too soon to drop “Climate Change” and go back to “global warming” yet?
Madistan without power? What a shame.
With no power to run the AC, Madistan residents are reduced to blowing eachother.
Details at eleven.
Eventually. But it’ll take DECADES longer...there’s WAY too much ‘other people’s money’ to blow through in that town before the collapse.
Big Hospital Footprint. Big University Footprint. Big Government Footprint. Big Insurance Footprint.
I’ve been waiting for, ‘The Workers Paradise ‘ to fall apart my entire adult life, LOL!
(Left the area three years ago. SO glad that I did!)
I just checked the temperature plots. 91 in Madison is the warmest I can find anywhere in the state. This is a heat wave? C’mon, this is July; what do y’all expect?
re: “If it’s a heat wave or something else, it does demonstrate that the electrical grid is weak and vulnerable.”
One link does not the whole chain make ...
Watching the news today you’d think it had never been over 90 degrees in July before.
Absolute full-out propaganda mode.
Hold the phone, Joan! ATC owns this with MG&E!
Could be sabotage, as ATC is trying to put big, ugly electrical towers all across our pristine ‘Driftless Area’ and the activists want it stopped.
The power will be going through our area to Madison with no stops for anyone else along the way.
re: “If it’s a heat wave or something else, it does demonstrate that the electrical grid is weak and vulnerable.”
So, right off the bat you’re ruling out human error, failed maintenance procedures, malicious vandalism, or an act of nature (lightning)?
And to “cure” whatever you think in your mind is wrong, you want to blindly spend BILLIONS ... right?
Do you also believe in global warming?
Add in the HUMIDITY - it’s like 105 degrees.
Where I live we’re under a Heat WARNING until 7pm Saturday night.
Blech! We only have A/C in the bedroom, so I think I’m going to go to bed now, LOL!
Though I do hope no one’s in the Ruby Marie elevator- yikes!

The **heat** of the day occurs in the afternoon; note the time at which this occurred. (Maximum demand occurs during the heat of the day, in the afternoon.)
