Neil Armstrong’s Death, and a Stormy, Secret $6 Million Settlement
The New York Times ^ | July 23, 2019 | Scott Shane and Sarah Kliff

Posted on 07/23/2019 4:19:35 PM PDT by John W

When Neil Armstrong died in a Cincinnati hospital two weeks after undergoing heart surgery in 2012, his family released a touching tribute addressing the astronaut’s millions of admirers around the globe.

“Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty,” they wrote, telling fans of the first man to walk on the moon that “the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.”

But in private, the family’s reaction to his death at 82 was far stormier. His two sons contended that incompetent post-surgical care at Mercy Health – Fairfield Hospital had cost Mr. Armstrong his life, and even one expert retained by the hospital would find serious problems with his treatment.

The hospital defended the care, but paid the family $6 million to settle the matter privately and avoid devastating publicity, documents show. The hospital insisted on keeping the complaints and the settlement secret.

You think he might have lived longer without the surgery? Most likely.

“paid the family $6 million to settle the matter privately”

And they accepted? Sounds like that’s that.

Might already be happening in many hospitals, especially those in sanctuary cities.

Why settle for Mercy Hospital when the Cleveland Clinic is in its backyard?

Well, a good number of people do die after heart surgery, and being 82 years old doesn’t help. Also, as far as I know, he didn’t have any connection to Hillary, so that typical cause of usual demise is not a factor.

Probably just crappy medical care, at most, coupled with age.

The Cleveland Clinic was several hundred miles away. He was in Cincinnati—which isn’t exactly Podunk.

Bill Paxton died after heart surgery and IIRC he was around 60. Serious surgeries sometimes have serious complications. I am sad to see malpractice if there wasn’t incompetence or malfeasance. As I won’t go to the New York Slimes, I am unclear if either of these incidents were present.

Look at what lights a fire under NYT butt.

Something that the Armstrong family might not want to see in a newspaper.

New York Times is fearless, isn’t it.

Well, maybe it is. Second tier cities many times have marginal expertise, I've found.

For my heart and intestinal problems I get whisked to the University of Michigan medical center immediately! I live in central lower Michigan. I have Tricare (retired military) and Medicare. They authorize helicopter transportation if necessary.

He would have lived even longer with competent surgery. I know many people his age who have including my father.

Well, that is a very damning account. I guess the lawsuit was proper. Just sad that Armstrong is gone and now his legacy will forever be remembered with an asterisk.

Mercy Health killed humankind’s first extra world explorer.

They killed the firsy man on the moon.

Put that on a tee shirt.

Only beaten by NASA losing the tapes of the first steps on the moon. Forevermore.

LMAO

Wow, I’m amazed that folks here are taking at face value medical conclusions by a NYT reporter and the lawyer wife of Armstrong’s son.
