White House proposed new rule will cut 3.1M people from food stamp program

According to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials, the Trump administration will propose a rule Tuesday to reduce unwarranted access to food stamps, removing 3.1 million from the program and saving taxpayers $2.5 billion.

President Trump has argued that many Americans now using SNAP are not in need, given the strong economy and low unemployment.

Recommended changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) would limit access to food stamps for households with savings and other assets. The goal is to end automatic eligibility for those already collecting other federal and state assistance.

According to Reuters, the residents of 43 states automatically become eligible for food stamps via SNAP if they receive benefits from another federal program...

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue said during a conference call with reporters that some state governments have “misused this flexibility” and...

“Some states are taking advantage of loopholes that allow people to receive the SNAP benefits who would otherwise not qualify and for which they are not entitled,”...

“Unfortunately, automatic eligibility has expanded to allow even millionaires and others who simply receive a TANF-funded brochure to become eligible for SNAP when they clearly don’t need it,”.

I signed up about 15 months after you.

Sometimes generalizes aren’t accurate. In fact, from what I’ve seen, most aren’t.

There are groups that trade information on just how to “mine” state and federal benefits and they make a good living not doing a thing but mocking people who work to support their family and pay taxes that support these slackers.

There is one family of three ,mother father and daughter, who I believe are pulling down 3 to 4 grand a month. The daughter is 60, never worked a job and is faking disability to get money from her father’s benefits.

“I know that literally billions of dollars in cash went missing from pallets in Iraq. The outrage around here was just barely louder than crickets.”

I don’t recall hearing about that. I try to look at at least the headlines of articles posted throughout the day but that one didn’t catch my attention. When did that happen?”

I believe rintintin is conflating in his/her mind the pallets of money Obama had shipped to Iran in the dark of the night during his regime. What this has to do with food stamps is beyond me. Someone I know very well was fraudulently gaming the food stamp system for years, but recently got caught and gets stamps no more.

One question would be how is THIS president who is proposing this food stamp rule change handling your issue of blowing money on foreign wars and more?

“One big scam is for Muslims to go on assistance and they send any excess money to their home countries to fund terrorism.”

TRUE. One of my friends worked with a muslim years ago, he immigrated and was driving a brand new Mercedes or BMW, right off the bat - can’t remember which.

Was getting every single welfare benefit he could and laughed about it. Sent money he made from selling his food stamps. Also was involved with selling cigarettes somehow, not sure how. Made $$$$$ off of that as well.

They have so much money when they come here but can hide it somehow and get benefits. Illegals and refugees get thousands each month. Cut off the money and they will stop coming.

If the stamps are blue, say “USDA Prime” and are on a chunk of meat, they can fill one in a most pleasing way...

As long as we’re cleaning up the corruption, let’s get rid of The Gourmet, fast food. And luxury items covered by these food programs and stick to basic nourishment. Besides, it is healthier.

The WIC model would be an adequate baseline.

And if government cheese is offensive... drop it.

Agreed. This isn’t that expensive a program. I in general also do not like discouraging savings, which is what these changes do. I’d rather put limitations such as no more than $ xxxx money consecutively and a lifetime cap.

I think rintin's point is we spent nearly $10 trillion in the middle east in the last 16 years and especially first half of those years, conservatives in general not only didn't complain about blowing that kind of money, but openly cheered Bush/Cheney on for their failed nation-building exercise. The food stamp $ in question here is 0.004 of the amount of money over that same time period, and at least it goes to US citizens and supports a lot of jobs (farmers, distributors and grocery store employees)

Of all of our social programs in the US, the food stamp one is the one I have the least issues with and I would not do anything that discourages savings (means tested) in general as it creates a permanent poverty class as their is significantly less incentive to save.

That’s a start. Need to cut 99% of all welfare funding.

The welfare office secretary here quit after realizing she made less working 40 hrs/week than their clients did sitting on their couches.

Do you have any folks who legitimately need the assistance?

Yes. 90% or so of the folks are legit. The remaining 10% usually have outside income in cash that they don't report. If they did they would prolly become ineligible.

Oh please spare us. The snap program does at food to illegals and food to many who have been frauds.

I know a lady who works and she is over 60. She makes very little and struggles to pay her bills. She needed SNAP. She was doled out 15 bucks a month. Ticks me off when I see illegals loading up the grocery cart.

I saw a young couple at WalMart loading $800 of groceries up they had bought with their EBT card. What is wrong with this picture? They were in their 20’s and looked healthy enough to work.
If these poor people have to use their own cash to buy food how can they afford fancy hair dos and get their nails done?

I agree with you that simple “all or none” thresholds give people a bad incentive, to keep their income from growing.

If making $100 dollars more costs you $500, it is a roadblock to advancing. You called it a “landmine”.

Your 2 to 1 gradual transition off of benefits sounds like better policy, even if it is not as simple for the bureaucrats who administer it.

“Anything about citizenship?”

Not in this particular action, but there is currently a Government-wide effort to exclude illegal aliens from Government benefits.

This effort was planned and subjected to internal legal review for some time prior to this Spring, when White House Adviser Stephen Miller announced the systematic effort would begin rolling out over the following months.

New proof of citizenship requirements have been implemented, and illegals who are part of the household (dependents) of legal residents or citizens are being excluded from some benefits.

HUD has taken action to exclude illegals from occupying public housing.

Reportedly, there have been a host of “nuts and bolts” policy and procedure changes across several Departments and Agencies in recent months.

The unprecedented slow rolling of President Trump’s appointments hampered such reforms earlier in the administration, but both appointments (since the “nuclear option” was invoked) and reform of benefits eligibility for illegal aliens have been accelerating this year.
