Trump Eyes Purchase Of Greenland
The Wallstreet Journal ^ | Aug. 15, 2019

Posted on 08/16/2019 2:33:03 AM PDT by Helicondelta

President Trump made his name on the world’s most famous island. Now he wants to buy the world’s biggest.

The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has captured the former real-estate developer’s imagination, according to people familiar with the discussions, who said Mr. Trump has, with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

U.S. officials view Greenland as important to American national-security interests. A decades-old defense treaty between Denmark and the U.S. gives the U.S. military virtually unlimited rights in Greenland at America’s northernmost base, Thule Air Base. Located 750 miles north of the Arctic Circle, it includes a radar station that is part of a U.S. ballistic missile early-warning system. The base is also used by the U.S. Air Force Space Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The U.S. has sought to derail Chinese efforts to gain an economic foothold in Greenland. The Pentagon worked successfully in 2018 to block China from financing three airports on the island.

The American gold vaults hold gold reserves for many nations.

To settle balance of payments through the bank of international settlements in Switzerland, Gold is moved from say the Brazil vault to the Austria vaullt to settle the account at the settlements bank in Switzerland.

I think gold settlements occur monthly.

The wishes of the indigenous should be considered also in this and it should be up to them. It would be like selling the Navajo Nation to China without any choice of those it truly belongs to. The indigenous are not physical property to be sold or purchased. Therefore a treaty would be much more appropriate and would include the input and approval of the indigenous also.

No... The interests of those who live there come first. Not everything the U.S. will bring to them will be positive and in their best interests. To completely disregard the interests of those who live there would be selfish in the least.

The ice cap over Greenland is all fresh water. If you could buy the place and figure out a way to affordable melt and monetize all that fresh water...

...You could at least write a Heinleinesque novel!

Me too, But I also think the impression we make on the world when setting up any satellite location is just important, if not even more important, for our own interests and security. It is a detriment to our own security if we ignore common courtesy and diplomacy with pure self interest. It makes them right and us wrong.

In everything we do we should be seen as a fair and respectful state. Without this we cannot claim to be the superior culture and nation as we should be. We should always take the high road instead of the low road if the outcome is to be the same. We can’t go around stepping on folks as an example of who we are, it emboldens our enemies and gives them even more confidence which makes us even less secure.

Toss in an extra $3 billion, to give every citizen in Greenland an immediate $50,000, if they vote to join the USA.

They are valuable for their rare earth minerals, a key component to manufacturing energy dense capacitors and batteries.

They’re also important because they are literally one of the only developed sources of rare earth minerals outside of China and not held by a Chinese corporation.

Wasting his time then. Denmark is part of the EU. Trade agreements are with them. If he goes there asking to buy Greenland they're just going to laugh at him.

That’s true! Probably looking to snap up the next Alaska in terms of resources, a layover and emergency landing space for commercial flights, and to build a big staging base to cut the distance Europe. ...If we ever needed that for some reason.
