Trump on guns: 'We do have a lot of background checks right now'
CNN Politics ^ | August 18, 2019 | Nikki Carvajal and Paul LeBlanc

President Donald Trump on Sunday emphasized a need for the country to focus on "a very big mental health problem" in the wake of two mass shootings in one weekend that left 32 people dead earlier this month as he appeared to defend current US gun control measures, stating "we do have a lot of background checks right now."

"It's the people that pull the trigger, not the gun that pulls the trigger so we have a very, very big mental health problem and Congress is working on various things and I will be looking at it," Trump told reporters on the tarmac before heading back to Washington after a vacation at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The White House, Trump said, is "very much involved" in the discussions Congress is having to address gun violence and while "a lot of things are happening on the gun level" he said "the concept of mental institutions" must be addressed.

"These are people that have to be in institutions for help, I'm not talking about as a form of a prison, I'm saying for help and I think it's something we have to really look at, the whole concept of mental institutions," he said. "I remember growing up we had mental institutions, then they were closed -- in New York, I'm talking about -- they were, many of them closed. A lot of them were closed and all of those people were put out on the street."

Some people cant be treated with medication alone and need custodial care. Unless they commit a crime such people today must agree to be institutionalized.

ImVho, we NEED a GOOD & very STRICT Background Investigation that screens for OBVIOUSLY dangerous people, whether they have a “pattern of committing violent acts against other persons” AND or they are in OBVIOUS need of mental health treatment.

The PROBLEM with Background Checks is WHO do we Patriots/Constitutionalists TRUST to actually perform the investigations.
(I wouldn’t trust ANY leftist, Marxist, “Progressive” and/or DIMocRAT in the 21st Century to do a PROPER & LAWFUL investigation of WHO did anything of any sort, as they cannot be TRUSTED to NOT be a BIGOT, CLUELESS FOOL, to LOVE this once-free Republic and/or even to NOT routinely LIE in their reports.)

Let me give you/everyone just a single example of the sort of people who should be INVESTIGATED & thereafter barred from possessing ANY dangerous implement AND that should be required to undergo treatment for a “serious mental disease or defect”. ====> When I was a City Marshal long ago, we had a local resident male, named James Robert “JimBob” S_________________, III.
Everybody who had ever spent 15 minutes listening to his ranting, against ALL women, “Meskins”, “The N-Word”, Papists, “dirty Kikes” & other “unfavored groups” AND heard what he constantly said that he was going to do “TO PUNISH” those people, KNEW that there was “something seriously wrong in that guy’s head”.

During my tenure as the Marshal one of my Deputies or I
must have “picked him up” & “charged him” at least ten times for assaulting various people, for shoplifting, residential burglary & for “theft of livestock”.
(The DA seldom “proceeded to trial”, as it evidently was “too much trouble” to indict/try him. - On the 2 occasions that he was actually tried in our county the judge gave him a 50.oo fine plus court costs for “simple assault” & a 500.oo fine plus court cost for stealing a cow.)

About 2 years after my wife passed away from cancer & I requested to return to AD with the Army, I heard that “mostly harmless JimBob” had been caught breaking into a store in Gregg County. = The DA in that county didn’t see the business burglary as “trivial”, had him indicted by grand jury & started preparations for trial. - During those preparations, a search warrant was issued for his rented house in our county. That search discovered evidence of numerous other burglaries, numerous pairs of “little girl’s panties” & (to the horror & surprise of the officer, who searched the house) a withered/dried-out human hand.

Subsequent questioning of the subject got an “admission” that “JimBob” had burglarized at least 20 houses in 4 nearby counties, to “- - - - look at & touch sleeping kids & to get me some souvenirs”.
(”JimBob” also admitted that during his “one person crime spree” that he had been armed with a hunting knife & a .32 caliber revolver.)

As a result of that “admission” & the evidence in the commercial burglary, “JimBob” received “25 years to Life” in the TDC for his varied felony crimes.
(As far as I know in 2019, he is still confined at BETO 1.)

Fwiw, my point in recounting this episode is that “a pattern of misdemeanors” is NOT “a minor thing” & having been “handled by LE officers” repeatedly should be JUST CAUSE to determine if the individual should be able to purchase or simply possess any dangerous weapon and/or NEEDS treatment for a mental condition. -— During such a background investigation, other crimes may well come to light.

Note: Who the human hand “belonged to” was never discovered, as far as I know.

Just my OPINIONS, TMN78247

Here is the problem with the idea for more asylums. We have a culture where the mentally ill are considered normal and the sane are now a very small minority. How can it be done with this as the reality?

“President Reagan’s biggest mistake (arguably) was allowing congress to put so many mentally ill people on the streets.”

The ACLU was responsible for a the nuthouses being closed, they sued in federal court and the states had no choice but to close most of them.

Yup. Even people who are willing to undergo genital muilation to change their own sex are not considered insane. That’s insane.

I don't understand the history of that...what happened exactly?

I loved Reagan and I think the Reagan legacy is so important. I will admit no president is perfect and he was Rick Rolled by the a-hole DemRats and the gutless GOP especially in guns, mental health and immigration.

RWR did NOT “get rolled”. Instead the DIMocRATS just plain LIED in writing & there was ZILCH that Reagan tried that would break the DIM’s stranglehold on our government back then.
(Does that sound familiar, given the CORRUPTION of “Nanny”
Pelosi & company in the HoR, NOW?)

I still have a gut feeling that is is a ploy to make the demonrats come out with all their insane proposals and tyrannical ideas to enslave the people. Once out, they can’t be pulled back. They will all follow the script just like the current pivot from Russia to racism.

We have two cop cars for a 30 mile by 30 mile county. IF they take the guns away do you think they will get more cop cars. Or will people just huddle in their homes waiting 30 minutes for a cop.

President Trump gets it right

If a person is a legit, serious enough danger to commit mass murder that they be denied access to guns, that person needs be committed and given treatment.

Gun are just a tool and as we see from Europe, mass murderers find a way to commit their crimes without access to guns

My, my lookie at all the excuses we can create. Americans love their delusions.

Here us a fact. 26 out of 27 of the latest mass shootings occurred where there was no stable influence of a father in the home. Make that 100 % for all the shootings in Chitown, Balmore, etc.

Here is another fact. It is not mental health that needs to be addressed. It is EVIL that must be recognized. How so very modern and quaint to treat evil as a mental health problem. I choose unicorns for a hundred Alex.

“...listening to the people...”

I agree, the President seems to have listened and perhaps dropped the terrible red flag laws idea.

However, on to the next subject: we the people need to get very vocal that justice against the coup plotters takes place.

I have bad feeling that Barr negotiated with the deep state - you end the Mueller witch hunt and I will slow walk, i.e., not go after the coup plotters.

I hope I am wrong.

It was a SCOTUS ruling that did it.

Three Class A misdemeanors = one felony.

Three felonies = life locked up.

It works.

Enforce the laws we already have.

Passing new laws is meaningless if we don't enforce the ones already on the books.
