Danish royal family 'surprised,' lawmakers fume as Trump cancels Denmark visit over Greenland

The Danish royal family was “surprised” after President Trump scrapped a planned visit to Denmark following comments by the country's prime minister that the idea the U.S. might buy Greenland from them was “absurd.”

Trump had been expected to visit Denmark on Sept. 2-3 as part of his trip to Europe, but until his tweets Tuesday, there were no solid indications the visit was centered on buying Greenland.

"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," Trump wrote.

The White House later clarified that the entire trip to Denmark had been scrapped, including a planned meeting with Denmark's Queen Margrethe II.

The cancellation of the visit left the Danish royal family flabbergasted, while other politicians said the snub was “deeply insulting.”

“It [the cancellation] was a surprise -- we have nothing more to say about this case,” said Lene Balleby, head of communications for the Danish royal family.

Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a former prime minister, tweeted that Trump's cancellation was “deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark,” while ex-foreign minister Martin Lidegaard told Danish broadcaster TV2 that the situation was “a diplomatic farce” and slammed Trump for “grotesque” behavior.

“Total chaos,” the former finance minister Kristian Jensen wrote. “This has gone from a great opportunity for a strengthened dialogue between allies to a diplomatic crisis.”

Pernille Skipper, the speaker of Parliament’s leftist red-green alliance, tweeted that Trump “lives on another planet,” adding that he’s “smug and disrespectful.”

Make Greenland Great Again. Green MGGA hats. I did not misspell.

Sorry, I should have put a smiley in there.

I still like the idea of green MAGA hats. Puts out our message with an addition “go green[land]” hint to our President.

Plus, the other side has had the color green for too long. We need to repossess it. :-)

And calling a legit proffer from a POTUS “absurd” is not insulting?

“The US acquisition of Greenland would be _great_ for US national morale—and Trump _can_ make it happen”. Fine as far as you went; but think what it would do for Green-land and Denmark. The possibilities are endless; unless Greenland insists upon remaining a bunch of huts alongside some muddy cowpaths. As I see it, Denmark is holding Greenland down; not unlike a redheaded stepchild.

55000 inhabitants. $5 million each. $275 billion. Finance with 100 year bonds. Second question on the referendum after independence is do you want to become a US territory, get $5 million and become a US citizen.

That's a pretty generous offer you're making with US tax dollars.

Socialist much?

I mean what would you do?

I'd let Denmark keep Greenland and return that money to its source -- the US taxpayer.

But that's just me. I'm not a socialist bent on spending other peoples' money.

For that kind of dough, I’d move there, change my name to Fnerd Nunuk Fnerdhabsen, and start eating whale blubber in my igloo.

The current PM is a leftist but she has pissed off a lot of Danes by taking a hardline approach against immigration.

So the Louisiana purchase and Seward’s Folly and Florida purchase from Spain never mind all our other purchased land aquisitions as a nation were socialist? Gotcha.

(God punishes us by putting argumentative self righteous idiots in our lives.)

You beat me to it. One of Wayne’s greatest roles and probably his best film quote. Most people still probably don’t get it. But Duke and John Ford certainly did.

Trump needs to apologize.

Apologize for what?

Apologize for canceling a trip, when nobody really knows the actual reason for the cancellation?

Trump told us the reason: "based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time."

Maybe the bitch shouldn’t have called Trump’s plan “absurd,” especially because the U.S. has tried before — TWICE — and no Danish leader thought it was wise to insult those American presidents for it.

Speaking of self-righteous idiots...

How much money did the US government give to the residents of said purchased lands at the time of purchase? Take your time. We'll wait for your answer.

Buying land is one thing. Giving US taxpayer dollars to the residents to bribe their support is another.

I don't expect a socialist, such as yourself, to recognize, let alone acknowledge, the difference.

FRegards,

Greenland is a negative tax consumer for Denmark. They are looking for budget cuts and the $50MM or so they send to that icebox every year would be an easy cut.

We want to make sure the PRC does not get an Atlantic Ocean base for us to factor in to any future war planning. We also probably wanna figure out if there is anything worth getting out of the ground there once global warming melts all that pesky ice.

The folks that live in Greenland are probably hoping that Uncle Sugar will show up with lots of cash and US Territorial Passports so they can easily move to places where they don’t risk freezing to death in July...

Denmark didn’t deserve this. The royal family is superb. Trump needs to apologize.

Nonsense. The Danish PM should apologize for insulting Trump -- and then resign

I didn’t see any of the words that were used by the Danish Pastries like;
referring to President Trump
grotesque
smug
insulting
disrespectful
lives on another planet
Their leaders appear to be as bad as the New York Times.
APOLOGY...I don’t think so.

We offered to negotiate with the Danes and they said no. It seems like you are jealous of the Inuits good fortune. It is not a bribe. It is payment for goods. 55000 people happen to have the right to decide. Paying them to decide our way is not a bribe. It is a purchase.

Blow your concept of socialist out your ... This is pure capitalism. Why so much? The Chinese sit ready to bid 300 billion plus. Lucky for us they have stepped on their proverbial pecker with Hong Kong and Greenland gets to see.
