With our country currently wading through the miasma of another potential Impeachment inquiry, it can be difficult to remember a time when the President of the United States could rise above his circumstance and truly lead a country and move it forward. As it stands, this happens to be the 39th anniversary of the election of just such a president.
Thirty nine years ago, Ronald Reagan did what few other men had done in American history. He not only won the presidency, but defeated Jimmy Carter, an incumbent president running for re-election. Carters presidency was hamstrung by a myriad of crises and catastrophes, none so embarrassing as the enduring failure to rescue the American hostages held in Iran. He faced adversity in office, but so does every president.
It was in how he approached these issues that we see the most stark contrast between him and Reagan. Reagan ran the White House with his customary aplomb and grace, always seeing the humor in things, even his own assassination attempt.

It was that much of a whipping of Carter by Reagan.
This author is idiotically glossing over the hate and vitriol that came from the left and the MSM for the entire time Ronald Reagan was President. I still remember when President Reagan died and millions of Americans came out to mourn and the talking heads were asking l”Who are all these people? Nobody I know voted for Reagan!”
This article is just another provocateur lying about the past in an attempt to trash President Trump by comparison. Ronald Reagan was a fantastic president who was loved by the American public while the scum infesting D.C. hated him the whole time.
Jimmy Carter branded Ronald Reagan a racist throughout that 1980 campaign so I thought it was sweet justice when Reagan wiped him out, and I happened to be watching NBC News that night so it was extra nice to see John Chancellor call Reagan the winner at 8:15 EST, way before the west coast closed their polls!
Craig Shirley wrote a book on the 1976 GOP primary. He’s an expert.
In 1983 I was fortunate enough to shake his hand at the NRA convention in Phoenix.
His unabashed optimism, cemented my belief in conservatism. I remarked to one of my friends attendig with me that we had just seen the greatness of a Lincoln.
That is still true today.
Even an “expert” can lie by omission. There was never a point during Ronald Reagan’s presidency were the scum of Washington DC accepted Reagan, let alone respected him.
There are many parallels between Reagan and Trump.
Both were constantly attacked by the MSM.
Both were accused of starting WW3.
Both were accused of being mentally unstable.
Both had problems with key members of their own party trying to stab them.
It was even earlier than that. I was in DC. I had been out in the VA countryside all day, but got to my friend’s house for the election night party. When I walked in the door, I was greeted by the news that it was all over. That was maybe 7 pm. My liberal friends were bummed. I wasn’t. An excellent lesson learned at an early age, that mainstream media lie about D strength in close races.
It was over while the polls out West were still open.
I excitedly rushed home after buying my first VCR that day (RCA w/ remote $1400)
I hooked it up and turned on the TV, there was a solemn John Chancellor in front of a national map, sea of blue (yes, B L U E)
Game over.
I was elated at what I saw, but super pissed I missed a good part to have been recorded
Yes, my first ever VCR recording was A Great Day in American History
Even more so than Who Shot JR later that month
Yes, I have both recordings
The fake news attacked Reagan and the First Lady every day, all the time.
The current vile @ssholes in the fake news dont want to talk about that part of history.
There was never a point during Ronald Reagans presidency were the scum of Washington DC accepted Reagan, let alone respected him.
They called him many names. One was Amiable Dunce.
They never thought for a second he was smarter than they were. Even when he repeatedly beat them.
Oh yeah, the media sure let them have it every day.
Nancy was Marie Antoinette reincarnate. Let ‘em eat cake. Ketchup is a vegetable. Let’s buy some new White House china.
Ron was an idiot who was going to start World War III. Senior citizens would all be eating dog food by the time he got his way with the budget. In some ways he got it maybe even a little worse than what Trump faces because the MSM had firmer control over the media (although the Democrats had not yet degraded to the point where they’d actually try a phony impeachment).
I was living in Alaska at the time and couldn’t wait for 5:00 so I could leave work and go vote.
It must’ve been about 3:00 when my sister called from the east coast to tell me it was over, and called for Reagan. I still voted
It’s morning again in America.
It's happening today, and yesterday and the past 3 years.

>>”it was over, and called for Reagan. I still voted”<<
Just had to tell you I loved your post. That was the first GOOD election I ever had in my near-80-years now, until 2016 when we elected President Trump. So I’ve had 2 for Reagan, and I’ll be helping to make it 4. What I loved was that all 4 of my kids were able to vote for Reagan, too - my youngest was 18 that year. They are ALL still proud of that. So am I. :-)
