Report: Mitch McConnell Likely to Acquit Trump, Not Dismiss Impeachment Charges
Breitbart ^ | December 12, 2019 | JOSHUA CAPLAN

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to acquit President Donald Trump in the Senate if he’s impeached in the House, not just dismiss the charges against him, two senators told CNN on Wednesday.

CNN reports:

Republicans want to have a vote on acquittal — to clear the President of the charges against him — not simply rely on a 51-vote threshold procedural motion to dismiss the hotly disputed case.

The Constitution mandates 67 votes are required to convict the President and remove him from office, a barrier widely considered too high to be reached in this case.

One vote McConnell can’t rely on is that of Vice President Mike Pence, who has “no role in impeachment,” according to a GOP leadership aide, despite being president of the Senate with the mandate to break ties.

One of the senators, speaking anonymously, said McConnell would not call a vote on a motion to proceed to the impeachment articles unless he knew he had the 51 votes needed to end the trial, which would then set up a final vote on the articles themselves. On that final vote, 67 votes would be needed to convict Trump and remove him from office.

Speaking to CNN on the record, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) argued that it “would make more sense” to vote on impeachment articles than on a motion to dismiss. Cornyn noted the second option would mean the Senate would “decide this on a 51-vote threshold, with the potential tie and all the recriminations that would flow from that.”

-- ... why McConnell will not bring up USMCA until impeachment trial is completed ... --

That's just McConnell poking his thumb in Trump's eye. He isn't going to get any leverage from the delay.

McConnell is going to be a drag on Trump's agenda to the extent he can get away with, without getting the GOP below about 45 members in the senate. His "sweet spot," the one that the real rulers of this country (certainly not the people) strive for is 45-49 GOP Senators.

Isn’t this what McConnell said he was going to do?

Impeachment nullifies the election.

“President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years,”

Amendments can only add, or clarify, but not modify a Constitution.

Trump can run for 8 more years.

IIRC, there was a trial for Bubba in the Senate and it lasted 5 weeks.

Acquittal without a trial will be portrayed as a partisan whitewash of a “legitimate impeachment of a guilty President”. We need a trial to totally discredit the sham pushed by Schiff, Nadler and Pelosi. We need to drag Biden’s corruption into the light of day, along with Schiff and the leakers, to expose the entire fraud against America.

You are so totally right. And you can be sure a couple of the GOP lizards like senator Pierre Delecto will echo the Dem lies and distortions. A good number of senate Repukes are no doubt looking forward to this opportunity to damage Trump. Its pretty obvious that they resent him.

I believe Trump is being set-up to support amnesty (green cards, farm workers, etc) in exchange for an acquittal...

the corrupt RINO McConnell will not secure an acquittal for free and amnesty is the price... satisfies the Cheap Labor Express and alienates Trump from his base.

I disagree!

Acquittal without trial treats it as the farce that it actually is! Trial gives this farce legitimacy. It needs to be treated with the contempt it deserves.

People are tired of this “clown show” dismissing it will be a popular move. Sure it will be seen as partisan, so was the impeachment - tit for tat! You don’t think people’s minds are not already made up about Trump? Dismiss it. McConnell says “You don’t like my decision? Then make it a 2020 election issue.!”.

No one will win on that issue except the usual suspects!

“We the People” will have the last word (and last laugh) next November. I may be a hopeless optimist, but I think I’d go crazy if I wasn’t. Besides, I’m also optimistic about the percentage of honorable Americans with common sense.

I agree with you, but I think Deep State has made the decision to cut its losses. This isn’t a surrender. It’s a strategic retreat. A trial would risk outting more of Deep State, and Deep State can’t afford that right now.

That said, I wish this would go to trial. Deep State is a threat to the republic. It needs to be defanged. A trial with Trump in charge of his own defense would do that.

Agree....no trial for this trash impeachment. Not one second. Show it the contempt it deserves. Deep-six it.

Anyway...I don’t trust the GOPe stumblebums in the senate to not get totally run over in the senate trial by the democrats.

I agree, a trial will expose the deep state, and lots of corruption in the House and Senate, McCain’s many sins will be exposed, so will Linda Graham’s that is why they are desperate to avoid a trial with witnesses. Another reason is the Democrats and their propaganda machine the media will claim the fix is in and they will hang this around Trump’s neck in the election and they along with the deep state and RINO’s hope Trump loses and this all goes away, a win-win for the establishment.

Trump should scream from the mountain tops and demand a full trial!!!

It is two terms or 10 years. Trump already served more than half of his first term.

Remember, his wife is Chinese and she is related to chinese businessmen. You can bet that McConnell would like to squeeze Trump over the chinese tariffs. Its either the tariffs or your presidency. You choose, Mr. Trump.
