A translation from a nurse on the 24th of Jan claims that some 90,000 cases of pneumonia are now active in China. Also, the claim is that the virus has mutated and it is now in the second generation. An additional claim is now that 1 person is likely to infect 14 others this may be due to the 5-9 day period before symptoms are such that most people seek help.even longer in some people.

An unverified translation of the nurse, posted by @purplelovehime, has been retweeted more than 13.7k times since Saturday, states: “I am Jin Wei. I am currently inside the Wuhan outbreak region, Han Hou area. I would like to describe the condition inside the Hubei province, as well as the outbreak situation in the entire China. Currently, there are already 90,000 cases of pneumonia contraction.”

“What is the rate of contraction? If one person contracted this disease and is not properly quarantined and treated, this I individual will infect 14 people that came in contact with him. That is a significant multiplier. During the spring festival, in our culture, families like to get together, dine together. But this is unlike any other years. I hope that people can stay home, do not gather, and do not visit families. There is a spring festival every year. If everyone can stay safe, you can always get together later,” the unverified translation of the nurse said.

The translation went on to say that medical supplies from bio suits, medical masks, goggles, and gloves “are in great shortages.”

90k pneumonia cases is pretty mild for China from ordinary flu. We don't know the numbers from which the pneumonia cases came. From other ordinary flu? Not a big deal. From a large number of coronavirus cases? That's in between, need more data, might be serious or not. Mostly from a modest number of coronavirus? Then that's serious.

A country with China's population should have at least 180,000 extra fatalities in the winter from flu and respiratory ailments. The number for the US with our much better health care is 60,000 extra fatalities in winter, mainly from flu, back in 2006 when the US population was 300,000,000. 90k extra in a bad flu year.

That's 90,000 in Wuhan alone, not in all of China.

So to scale, multiply by ~110 == 10 million cases of pneumonia.

And early reports are about 16% of the coronavirus cases are in serious or critical condition; maybe 10% need intubation or respirators.

Take *that* nationwide and it'll collapse ANY health care system.

By the way, did you see the Director of the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health talking about the possibility for crash research into multiple vaccines where money is not an object? In public. Under his own name. In so many words.

So I don't know if 90k is the city with 11m or the province with 58m or the country. Probaby the province from that wording. That's 155 per 100,000 whereas ours is about 25 per 100,000 right now.

16% of the coronavirus cases

We really have no idea how many cases there are because the mild ones are unreported.

I would expect a serious response to the epidemic including multiple vaccines, no different from other respiratory viral diseases. On that twitter feed the guy reiterates that we have no idea what the lethality is.

Yes, all the numbers are percent of tracked cases. No idea how many untracked. I would agree from the Chinese response that this is worrisome. But I will wait a few weeks to really worry or put it in the rear view mirror.

The spokespeople doing the videos are not professional journalists and they could be talking about the coronavirus or flu I don’t know. But, the last number I saw was around 2,000 cases. No telling if that was low but could have been.Hard to tell what the real number is.

Just the beginning...

This virus is unique. It spreads like the common cold and you can spread it to others before you even know you are sick. And with 14 day incubation, the real numbers are just now emerging.

Lots of people making fun of this, on this thread and others.

We’ll see how many are laughing in two weeks. Or a month.
