WASHINGTON Even as they are set to acquit President Trump in his impeachment trial this week, Senate Republicans appear to be increasingly breaking with his defense that he did nothing wrong.
© Erin Schaff/The New York Times I think he shouldnt have done it I think it was wrong, said Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, center right. Inappropriate, was the way Id say it. Improper, crossing the line. On Sunday, Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, who was a key vote against calling witnesses in the Senate trial, expanded upon his criticism that Mr. Trump was crossing the line in his pressure campaign against Ukraine. And Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa, who has remained a reliable defender of the president during his trial, called his actions not what I would have done.
A day before the first contest of the 2020 election, two days before Mr. Trumps State of the Union address and three days before his expected acquittal, they and other Republicans appeared to be coalescing around a more nuanced argument: Mr. Trumps efforts to push Ukraine into investigating a political rival while withholding critical military aid might not have been appropriate. But that did not warrant the presidents removal from office for the first time in American history.

The Times which is 17% owned by Mexico’s richest citizen, Carlos Slim, and which I now call the Mexico City Times could not get him impeached so now they are taking parting shots with the narrative that the universe thinks he is “bad”.
Well we’ll see. I hope not but if you look at the history of the Clinton impeachment Collins voted not guilty for Slick Willy. She’s still there and voted for witnesses this time. Romney isn’t up for a vote for a few years and he’s only there to run interference for the Rats. The rest of the squishy ones I wouldn’t trust them for anything.
Not sure, but if the vote to acquit does not pass it doesn’t automatically make him guilty. He is still not considered as guilty until actually found guilty in the following super majority vote. But if they don’t acquit, the monkey court is going to be extended out who knows how long even though they know very well they do not have the 2/3rds to convict.
Coming from Alexander, it is not a surprise.
He is a member of the Republican America hating “squad”.
dolsheviks = dolTsheviks. How does that work?
“Alexander alone is not the Republicans plural.”
Later in the article: “Senator Rob Portman, Republican of Ohio, said in a statement late last week that while some of Mr. Trumps actions were wrong and inappropriate, they did not rise to the level of removing a duly-elected president from office and taking him off the ballot in the middle of an election.
Just because actions meet a standard of impeachment does not mean it is in the best interest of the country to remove a president from office, said Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida.”
It was "non-standard" and shocked the hell out of the established players who were almost universally a bunch of crooks.
So, Lamar is “Republicans”....
Clinton committee an actual crime, recognized as such in all jurisdictions ever. Still not removed.
Fueling leftist outrage only helps crazy Bernie. Thats a good thing.
Ducking under his desk. Does something right then walks it back. Glad to get rid of the crooked Pissant.
1 old Dem governor obamacare supporter and some RINOS running for his seat, the 1 Trump supporter is running behind, not a politician a Trauma Ortho Surgeon. Legal Immigrant Christian Citizen who will get TN Eagle Forum support.
RINOs proving once again that they are real POSs.
Know what would shake them up and straighten them out? A peaceful revolution. Moderate Dems and Republicans need to switch parties and take over the independent party in mass, make it conservative again as it was meant to be, and become larger than the other two parties. “This is what you get for not truly representing our interests”. Just a concept rumor this might happen would have them ALL worried about losing their secure “tenured” incumbency. It would stop the “uniparty” direction they are headed.
True!
Senators are playing both sides.
I don’t get it. How can these @$$hole Rinos say Trump’s conduct was bad? The US gives billions in foreign aid to a struggling country who is paying kickbacks to American politicians and our President questions it. Thank God Mr. President. The RATS and the Media remained silent when Obama gave $150 billion to Iran to kill our troops and when Obama says “tell Vladdy I’ll be able to deal after the election and lets not forget Hillary paying for a phony Russian dossier to destroy Trump. Un f’n believable!!
Trump was doing due diligence as President. This “he did a wrong thing” sets a bad precedence ( Only for future Republican Presidents, not Democrat ones ).
You a betting man?
How many Dems will vote not guilty?
I’m guessing a minimum of 2 and perhaps 3.
That said if even ONE Dem votes to acquit Trump he gets to blast out he was ACQUITTED by a bi partisan Senate.
Oh and btw, how is it that only 2 Rep Senators voted for more witnesses but according to you more than two will vote him guilty? Could it be you think the evidence presented by the House was actionable on it’s own merits?
It cannot be that...can it?
New York slimes ... No need to read past the headline to know it’s bullshit
When did Lamar become the spokes-model for all Republicans?
You forgot: no charges.
