China is rapidly redefining itself as a rogue nation, too dangerous to stay in bed with as an integral part of the world economy. Reuters, no ally of the anti-globalists and populists shaking up politics in the US, UK, and elsewhere, reports:
Chinese President Xi Jinping warned top officials last week that efforts to contain the new coronavirus had gone too far, threatening the country’s economy, sources told Reuters, days before Beijing rolled out measures to soften the blow. (snip)
After reviewing reports on the outbreak from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and other economic departments, Xi told local officials during a Feb 3 meeting of the Politburo’s Standing Committee that some of the actions taken to contain the virus are harming the economy, said two people familiar with the meeting, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.
He urged them to refrain from “more restrictive measures”, the two people said.
Translated: Don’t worry about spreading this plague across the globe, the Communist Party needs the economy to be robust, so keep the factories open, along with the subways and busses needed to get workers to their jobs.
China’s trading partners see the matter rather differently. The leaders of the Chinese Communist Party have proven themselves willing to sacrifice the lives of tens of millions of their citizens in order to achieve their political goals, as the politically-induced famines under Mao Tse-tung prove. And reports leaking out of China seem to show a brutal disregard for human rights and lives in China’s response to the coronavirus.

Indeed. That would be a darn shame.
Spread far and wide: Involuntary Isolation. They have shown they are not fit to be with civilized nations. Their bumbling and bad intentions are an act of war, and they must be dealt with accordingly.
Did you see this?
Remove MFN status.
Look bad? Wait till the "street people" start coming down with this stuff. The sheer panic will cause these cities to burn to the ground. We'll have to use the military to prevent people from fleeing to the noninflected parts of the country. It'll make the usual Demorat urban riots look like fluffy corn farts. Just wait until it breaks out in Mexico. You think we have a illegal migrant problem now? You ain't seen nothing yet!
Coronavirus Outbreak Exposes Chinas Monopoly on U.S. Drug, Medical Supplies
"The coronavirus outbreak has exposed the United States dangerous dependence on China for pharmaceutical and medical supplies, including an estimated 97 percent of all antibiotics and 80 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients needed to produce drugs in the United States. "
Xi Jinping is right to pull back... when the world sees people dragged out of their homes and put in boxes or nailed up in their apartments we don't want Chinese trade or Chinese people, or anything from that hellhole.
Well, if Xi is specifically referring the extreme measure of barricading people into their own buildings without providing provisions, then I actually agree.
(Walking away muttering “I can’t believe I actually agree with a Chinese dick-tater.”)
I read elsewhere that the med stuff that India produces usually sources components from China, so I wouldn’t expect too much from them.
Agree.
Xi is walking a tight rope, he must maintain productivity or people start starving. If he he brings back productivity he greenlight the infection’s spread. Either way will shorten his career.
On one had, you have the country on lock down leading to all sorts of social and civil unrest. The economy is dying, and in danger of collapse which will kill a lot of people.
On the other hand, you have a virus that seems to attack men rampaging through your civilization, which is going to cause a collapse.
Now that the Philippines is letting China back in, Xi may be thinking “If I am going down, I might as well make the world burn with me!”
There are no good choices left.
Every business depends on China. Every one.
Hope you have a few months of meds and enough food to last.
Good luck.
Once upon a time Puerto Rico had near fifty pharmaceutical plants.
There was a tax incentive that existed for several decades, and during this time....I think the island cleared near 3-billion a year in local taxes. Lot of people were employed in this and it was the largest money-maker on the island.
Then one day....the tax incentives expired. The whole industry wrapped up and left...not just the island, but the US in general. Again....brilliant move on the House and Senate...helping to chase businesses out of the US to other countries.
