EPA Releases List Of Best Disinfectants To Use Against Coronavirus

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a list Tuesday of qualified disinfectants to use for protection against the coronavirus.

“The EPA-registered disinfectant products on our Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2 list have qualified under EPA’s emerging viral pathogen program for use against SARS-CoV-2, a coronavirus that causes COVID-19,” the website stated.

Coronaviruses are enveloped viruses, which means they are among the easiest types to kill with the appropriate disinfectant, according to the EPA.

There may be additional disinfectants that meet the criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2. EPA will update this list with additional products as needed,” the agency stated.

Some of the product brands on the EPA’s list include:

•Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Cleaner Spray
•Clorox Disinfecting Wipes
•Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist
•Professional Lysol Disinfectant Spray
•Purell Professional Surface Disinfectant Wipes
•Peak Disinfectant Wipes
•Sani-Prime Germicidal Spray
•Sani-Cloth Prime Germicidal Disposable Wipe

The virus is believed to be spread by people in close contact with each other and through respiratory droplets produced when a person infected with the virus coughs or sneezes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website.

“It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads,” the site read.

In a press release Thursday, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said using the right disinfectant is a huge part of preventing and reducing the spread of illness.

“There is no higher priority for the Trump Administration than protecting the health and safety of Americans,” he noted, adding, “EPA is providing this important information in a public and transparent manner

For disinfection, diluted household bleach solutions, alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol, and most common EPA-registered household disinfectants should be effective.

Diluted household bleach solutions can be used if appropriate for the surface. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for application and proper ventilation. Check to ensure the product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. Unexpired household bleach will be effective against coronaviruses when properly diluted.
Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:

5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water or
4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water

For soft (porous) surfaces such as carpeted floor, rugs, and drapes, remove visible contamination if present and clean with appropriate cleaners indicated for use on these surfaces. After cleaning:
Launder items as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and dry items completely, or
Use products with the EPA-approved emerging viral pathogens claims (examples at this linkpdf iconexternal icon) that are suitable for porous surfaces.

I know what kills the virus 100% of the time. One hour exposed to Bloomberg campaign ads. Unfortunately the ads also annoy and bore all living things to death, even plants.

"Well you’re not touching your face when you’re passed out."

That's a fool's reassurance if you're binging with friends. If you can get it from someone's respiratory droplets surely you can get from their vomit. There is an example of this from the literature in the 90's.

Marty: What happened to Stumpy Joe?

Derek: Well, uh, it's not a very pleasant story...but, uh, he died...uh...he choked on...the ac- the official explanation was he choked on vomit.

David: He passed away.

Nigel: It was actually, was actually someone else's vomit. It's not....

David: It's ugly.

Nigel: You know. There's no real....

Derek: You know they can't prove whose vomit it was...they don't have the facilities at Scotland Yard....

David: You can't print, there's no way to print a spectra-photograph...

Nigel: You can't really dust for vomit.

Guess it’s a good thing I planted 2 lemon trees in the yard at my SoCal. home.

Along with tangelos, blood oranges, washington naval oranges, and 4 different types of tangerine.

Don’t waste your lemon juice, the active ingredient in bleach is chlorine.

Chlorine atoms attack and destroy any organic molecules that are present in a liquid, that’s why it’s used in laundry, water treatment, and swimming pool applications.

Should have said Chlorine Ions, not atoms.

Been quite a few years since my water treatment classes.

I've been getting a 'touch' of that myself lately.
