Vital drug for people with lupus running out after unproven Covid-19 link: Italy and France now prescribing hydroxychloroquine for coronavirus

A stampede for an unproven “cure” for Covid-19 is clearing the pharmacy shelves of a medicine that is vital for up to 5 million people around the world suffering from lupus, as countries bow to populist pressure and abandon the trials that would show whether hydroxychloroquine works against coronavirus infection.

Both Italy and France have said doctors can now prescribe hydroxychloroquine – a less toxic version of the malaria drug chloroquine – even though there is no robust evidence to prove that it is effective against Covid-19.

Popular pressure for access to the drug has been ramped up by pronouncements from presidents Donald Trump in the US and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, both of whom have claimed it is a cure. An Australian businessman, the former politician Clive Palmer, has pledged to fund 1m doses “to ensure all Australians would have access to the drug as soon as possible”.

But the drug is already running out for people with lupus, a disorder of the immune system, who rely on it to stay well. Shortages are being reported from the UK to Thailand to France. India, which manufactures the raw ingredient, has banned all exports of the chemical to safeguard its own supplies and recommended all health workers to take the drug to protect themselves from the virus.

“We are incredibly concerned at the moment,” said Paul Howard of Lupus UK. “We started receiving inquiries from patients across the UK about a week ago. That’s been rapidly increasing – more and more people each day.”

For 90% of the more than 60,000 people in the UK with lupus, hydroxychloroquine is the mainstay of their treatment, preventing their immune system making too many antibodies, which can otherwise attack the body’s organs – mainly the kidneys and the skin,

Saw on Tucker’s show that doctors take the drug prophylactically.

Liberals are deliberately stifling the cure to prolong the economic destruction.

Democrats are evil scum.

Every. Single. One.

Exactly,

And other countries are starting to hoard their supply (not blaming them), so you have to make the active ingredient.

And then, oh then, you have to have someone PAY FOR THE MACHINES! Which in case you haven’t noticed, a lot of pharma companies are in a bit of distress right now.

That is the bitter irony.

This gets down to big problem with pharmacy. Most times a Rx will only provide you with a 30 day or 60 day supply for a patient that will have to take it everyday of their life. Why is there this limit? what happens if there is ever a massive computer failure or system breakdown. Lifetime users of drugs should have a longterm supply on hand. We do it by ordering as soon as allowable and slowly our inventory increases. Expiration dates are still a problem, but we have to assume there is a safety factor built in.

India too. Outlawed in at least two Rat States. There is no limit to how far the rats will go to hurt Trump. None.

Yes... so, what to do in the short term? Do we take the drug away from the people who have used and needed it for years?
The supply is very limited. What is the solution?

If it is still “unproven”, why are all the doctors taking the meds? They a massively ramping up production of ventilators, but why not chloroquine? What the hell is the delay?

Yes. Producing the same product that’s been around since the 1950’s is impossible. Because of machines or something.

Go be ignorant someplace else.

Triage

The drug stays in your system for 40 days. Ration to the ones who need it most (CV19 patients) and those who will be most able to survive.

Which means a lot of pain to people currently on it. Choice is pain, or a lot of dead people.

Just wait till the pain med scripts start getting rationed. The illegal opiods are already getting short on the street, and soon the pill seekers will be cut off. Then things get interesting.

All the replies so far couldn’t give a rip.

At best, a glib “make more”.

Meanwhile, we still don’t see if this disease is really that serious. Just getting all the news and politicians treating it as the Black Plague doesn’t make it so.

If it’s the Black Plague, then sure. It’s worth depleting supplies. Not sure this pandemic is worth threatening the lives of people with serious autoimmune diseases.

where in my post do i use the word impossible? A drug that is not widely used is not widely produced. Period. Drug companies make profit. My post described how they make profit. It also stated what is involved, how it must be accomplished, and the time frame to accomplish it in.

Ignorance is a lack of knowledge.
I have quoted, provided and installed this type of equipment. I have the knowledge.

You do not.

We DON’T HAVE EXTRA CAPACITY.

No one has extra processing laying around idle. If you did, the stock holders come by and demand you either sell the machines, or put in something more profitable.

It takes time to spool things up. Time to work the bugs out. You may be able to take a pill line making say a statin and made Quine, but where are you going to get the active ingredients from? The tooth fairy?

Not to mention the FDA will not let you just start making something different, you have to do a lot of testing to make sure you don’t accidentally kill people

I didn’t mean the disease itself is a picnic.

I meant that news has at best always mentioned malaria regarding this drug mix. Rarely is the chronic autoimmune spectrum mentioned.

Lindell said it took MyPillow workers three days to turn over a 200,000-square-foot factory into a facility to produce the masks. They are currently making about 10,000 a day and aim to produce up to 50,000 a day

Pushback against HDXYQ seems obviously motivated by Trump hatred and his hunch. It will be proven effective and will stop the death count and resulting panic.

What the media claimed would kill us all will be beaten, quickly and simply.
TDS will thereby have raised The Donald to the status of savior.

And yet again, coup attempt #1001 will come back to slap Ds and media (but I repeat myself) in the face. This slapback will carry more sting since it was a matter of life and death.

Well, isn’t this an opportunity?

Shouldn’t groups of citizens including us on this site be forming companies and opening factories to produce more?

You’re an arrogant know-it-all who’d rather panic than work.

You don’t have any idea what I know, or what I have done.

Piss off.
