The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced it is requesting manufacturers withdraw all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) ranitidine drugs from the market immediately. This is the latest step in an ongoing investigation of a contaminant known as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in ranitidine medications (commonly known by the brand name Zantac). The agency has determined that the impurity in some ranitidine products increases over time and when stored at higher than room temperatures and may result in consumer exposure to unacceptable levels of this impurity. As a result of this immediate market withdrawal request, ranitidine products will not be available for new or existing prescriptions or OTC use in the U.S.

The FDA is corrupt.
Three guesses where the ingredients probably come from.
What is zantac used for?
Are they made in China?
Just don’t touch my omeprazole!
“The FDA is corrupt.”
Probably less than most agencies.
I bit off topic, but.....how do they have the time for something like this NOW??
The FDA is corrupt.

I think it more likely that pharmaceuticals such as generic ranitidine are made in India and China where there are not infrequent contaminants introduced during their manufacturing processes.
Acid reflux (heartburn).
I don’t know that they’re going to find any on the shelves to recall. I looked in three different stores for a medication in that family and all three were almost totally out.
After this is over, the manufacturing companies should offer people a refund to turn in what they have at home. I’ll bet some people bought a year’s worth.
Time to shift at least drug manufacturing back to the US. Quality control in China especially has always been a problem. They want to cut corners. I know a chemist that used to travel to China several times a year to ensure food processors quality met standards as folks there would try to get away with things they didnt think would matter. Enough is enough.
“I bit off topic, but.....how do they have the time for something like this NOW??”
How do have time for posting something like this NOW??
Exactly!
Shouldn’t they be focusing on HCQ/Zpak trials/distribution, for CV cases, across the country???
This action may very well cause my death.
This is all about NDMA which is in cured meat like bacon.
All the other drugs for this purpose often cause extreme side effects, And even organ damage.
Zantac rarely causes strong side effects. If has saved countless lives through relief in suffering. It prevents stomach acid from causing serious damage to other parts of the body.
The first complaint was that it often had the chemical NDMA in it at the same rate as eating a strip of bacon. And wouldn’t you know it- that bacon causes cancer. Therefore Zantac causes cancer. Now they claim that at warm temps(Storage) the NDMA increases in strength over time. The obvious answer to is to store the medication in a refrigerator. Then it should last indefinitely.
Some people have Auto immune conditions where this drug is the only way that they can survive and go on with life. No diet in the world will be totally effective because the stomach makes too much acid. Even after drinking a sip of water. Many times when eating nothing at all.
Pepsid is the other drug in this category. However it has extreme side effects for a lot of people. Just check this out.

Prilosec is far worse. One only has to read the list of side effects for that baby. I tried it initially and I thought I would have to go to the emergency room. This one can kill you.
This FDA decision is petty, and a death sentence for many people. They should be ashamed of themselves.
Wasn’t “Zantac” use correlated with kidney damage a few years ago?
Or am I getting my acid blockers confused?
Totally stupid. This is used in low doses to control a lot of things (such as hot flashes) and many people are going to be seriously unhappy with this. I’m assuming this applies to any generics as well.
If it turns out it’s made in China, I’m sure we could make it here, since it’s been around for a long time.
No the kidney damage comes from some of the other medications that the FDA is asking people to switch to. It seems that kidney damage is more preferable than the risk of getting cancer from eating bacon.
