‘Historic’ N.J. public worker layoffs coming if no new coronavirus aid from feds, Murphy says

Gov. Phil Murphy painted a dire outlook for New Jersey public worker jobs on Saturday afternoon, pleading for more financial aid to lift a state economy that has been cratered by the coronavirus.

“We will have layoffs that will be historic,” Murphy warned, as he called for Congress to send more direct aid to states, and as he urged state lawmakers to help him borrow billions of dollars.

He added that the layoffs would be felt through New Jersey, at the state, county and local levels.

“That’s what’s at stake. I don’t know how many, but it is big, big numbers,” Murphy said.

Murphy expressed frustration with federal lawmakers, saying that many of them failed to understand the need for direct aid to states. The governor said he had “a concerning call” with U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Friday night, saying the New York Democrat told him there isn’t momentum in Congress to send states such financial help.

Well, seems that Phil has a choice to make. He can open up his state and start generating tax revenue, or he can stay closed and bankrupt it. The Feds better not give into this.

This will not happen but it should. Public workers with their large safe pensions have been shielded from this crises and all the others. They are happy to lock down everyone. They have nothing to lose. Their retirement is guaranteed. Their jobs have been guaranteed so far. I say you let them go. Give the new people 401Ks when new employees are hired back. So they have some skin in the game.

Now, is this really going to be a “layoff” (they don’t work, and DO NOT get paid) or furlough (they take time off, and eventually get back pay, making the furlough a paid vacation time)?

Ohhhhh noooo!!!! /sarc

Then they wont even have their public worker wages to recycle back into tax revenue. Local governments, dependent more on property taxes, and with schools still closed, should be O.K. - as long as enough people are not yet reneging on their property taxes due to unemployment.

Any federal aid to states and localities for their revenue shortages should be as interest bearing loans, not gifts, not grants.

What’s good for the goose can’t be bad for the gander. As any state’s unemployment rate rises as a result of shutdowns, proportionate layoff’s of government employees should be mandatory - elected officials and their appointees should fall on their swords first, and maybe a few state health officials for good measure. Trump should make the suggestion in a tweet or maybe a well timed executive order using his state of emergency powers.

Eff em. Lay em off. Texas taxes should not be used to keep on public workers in NJ.

This is what I passed along to my senator and rep

The longer the states are shut down, the worse their financial situation will be.

States will go broke, because with the decline in state income tax withholding and decline in sales tax revenue, states will not be able to balance their budgets.

They’re State workers....not Federal workers! Why do taxpayers from all the other States need to fulfill obligations that New Jersey made?
