The coronavirus pandemic is accelerating, with Thursday's 150,000 new cases the highest in a single day and nearly half of those in the Americas, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
"The world is in a new and dangerous phase," Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual briefing from WHO headquarters in Geneva. "The virus is still spreading fast, it is still deadly, and most people are still susceptible."
More than 8.53 million people have been reported infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 453,834 have died, a Reuters tally showed as of 1326 GMT on Friday.
edros, whose leadership of the WHO has been severely criticized by U.S. President Donald Trump, urged people to maintain social distancing and "extreme vigilance."
As well as the Americas, a large number of new cases were coming from South Asia and the Middle East, Tedros added.
WHO emergencies expert Mike Ryan drew attention to the situation in Brazil, where he said there had been 1,230 additional COVID-19 deaths in the previous 24 hours.
About 12 percent of infections in Brazil involved healthcare workers, he added, praising their bravery.
Brazil has the world's worst outbreak outside the United States, with 978,142 confirmed cases and 47,748 deaths.
"DIFFICULT JOURNEY" TO VACCINE
With many nations easing restrictions but fearful of a second wave of infections, Ryan urged a gradual and scientific approach.
"Exiting lockdowns must be done carefully, in a step-wise manner, and must be driven by the data," he said. "If don't know where it is the chances are the virus will surprise you."
Ryan said the resurgence of new clusters did not necessarily mean a second wave, while "second peaks" were also possible in one wave. The emergencies expert praised Germany, China and South Korea for their handling of the pandemic.

I watch the number for the US everyday and they are steadily going down. Very small right now, IMO. We seem to have licked this thing for now.
And I watch the panic increase everyday. More restrictions. More fear. OMG. And the Second Wave hasn’t even started!!!!!!!

The new clusters were predicted by people who were advocating for no lockdown as the lockdowns prevented herd immunity.

First, I don’t believe the numbers any more.
Second, even if true, the pandemic scare left the station a month ago. It’s time to get over it. We are already about to move past the next DemonRat scare, race riots. That makes us nearly ready for the next manufactured Rat crisis.

Saw footage today of Brazilian ministers/legislatures storming into a hospital claiming hundreds of cases and deaths because of Bolsonaro. The place is empty, no sharp spikes, etc.
In America, the number of cases is increasing only in States which never got hit hard. Meanwhile, the number of deaths is flat or declining in those States.
This means nothing more than that more mild cases are being caught by increased test volume.
North Carolina antibody testing shows 8 to 10% of the population has been infected, meaning only one in twenty infections is actually reflected by a “case” in that State’s data.
Anybody hyping “skyrocketing cases” is merely trying to create panic and destroy the economy, especially small businesses.

Texas numbers have been sharply up over the past week. Yet, the deaths have been about the same. I smell a rat.
Hope you saw the Brazilian government reps break into a hospital that had reported a huge number of infections and deaths...and find all the beds empty.
A lot of these reports are simply a scam by local officials to get more money.
Oh, just stop. The positives rates have fallen precipitously and we are doing fine spreading some immunity from the healthy while being careful in nursing homes, hospitals, etc. We’ve got the silly distancing and mask policing going on, which is killing small businesses, but we are not suffering from some unmanageable disease.
