Pope Francis called for the passage of civil union laws for same-sex couples in a documentary that aired in Rome on Wednesday, in a major departure from the position held by the Vaticans doctrinal office.
Homosexuals have a right to be part of the family, the pontiff said in Francesco, a documentary about his life. Theyre children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out, or be made miserable because of it.
What we have to create is a civil union law, he added. That way, they are legally covered. I stood up for that.
While serving as archbishop of Buenos Aires, Francis endorsed civil unions for gay couples as an alternative to same-sex marriages. However, he had never come out publicly in favor of civil unions as the pope.
"Its not surprising coming from Pope Francis because of the trail of individual statements he has made here and there over his papacy," said Prof. Bruce Morrill, the Chair in Roman Catholic Studies at Nashville's Vanderbilt University.
"Roman Catholicism does focus on natural law and it seems to me hes touching on a different aspect of this, which is that human beings are inclined towards and need these kinds of personal relationships. The elephant in the room is obviously sexual activity which the church very explicitly teaches against," he added.
Morrill, a Jesuit priest, added that one of Francis' characteristics was "that he likes to speak and act on the principle of mercy."
"What this statement doesnt do is change any official policies, but in a very patriarchal way he is saying we should be kind and compassionate," he said.

The Catholic ORG is not The One True Church begun on that fateful day of Pentecost. When you start your post conflating your ORG to the True Body of Believers Body of Christ, well, you go down hill from there. The Talking Mule Catholicism is not Christianity by a very long shot.
The talking mule is already hinting that!
If so, which man? (Luther? Calvin? Henry VIII?)
Asking for a friend...
the gays gave up their right to have kids when they choose to be gay
Civil unions but not marriage in the church? Bigot.
Luther
RE: Was this said ex cathedra?
NO. I haven’t seen any Pope speak ex-cathedra in my lifetime.
We all knew this was coming from this faggot pope eventually.
Come out from them, if you are Catholic. Your leader is a devil.
B16 is still pope in my eyes.
Is the Pope Catholic? Nope.
Took a little bit longer than many of the other former mainline denominations, but the Catholic Church joining the other denoms in going gay was inevitable.
Honestly I don’t get it. They say that it is only official when he is sitting on the throne. Makes no sense. He is the Pope! Anything he says anywhere at any time should be the official position of the RCC.
Apparently not, since he reportedly was making a comment in a film, as opposed to teaching moral law "from the seat" of St. Peter. Was this said foolishly and scandalously? Guess so!
Maybe he will convert to islam next week.
Get woke, go broke
Will he next re-write John 8: 1-30 in which he forgave an adulterous woman to read “Go and continue sinning”?
“Civil unions but not marriage in the church?”
One step at a time. That will be next.
This is the same process Protestant denominations went through.
The issue is not which org to side with. If you haven’t figured out that the real issue is an ABC proposition yet, well wake up before it is too late.
