A South Carolina-based surveillance firm that has sold services to the U.S. military is promoting its ability to provide real-time location information about 15 billion cars every month.
The company, called The Ulysses Group, says it can monitor vehicles in every country in the world, except North Korea and Cuba.
The claims come from a document obtained by the office of U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) in which the company has detailed its capabilities. Wyden is investigating companies that sell the data of consumers.
The company says it can track cars through sensors in vehicle parts - either installed by the car company, or by the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) - the company that provided the components.
The sensors collect information such as airbag and seatbelt status, engine temperature, and location, and then transmit that information either back to the car maker or to third parties.
Aggregator companies also purchase or obtain this data, repackage it, and then sell that data or products based on it to their own clients, Vice News reported on Wednesday.
Clients could include insurance companies, anti-terrorism agencies and the military

The amount of people who have access to the highly personalized data may surprise many car owners.

due to the convoluted nature of vehicle data collection, there are a whole variety of sources where locations might be procured from:.. the company that provides the map would have access to it; the company that provides the infotainment system may have access to it; the company that provides the traffic data may have access to it; the company that provides the parking data may have access to it.

Not my car, it’s a dumb car that doesn’t spy on me or rat me out.
Michael Hastings did not die because of a car crash..

Want to not be tracked?
Rip off that transceiver in the car. You will loose in-car GPS and On-Star (GM’s brand of connected car) or whatever version Ford, Honda, Lexus, BMW have.
You really SHOULD be using your cell phone anyway. You KNOW it’s tracked.
(Hey! This is the delusion of my choice rather than the much more popular mask-talisman as a protector from the Chinese evil spirit "Covid".
Best way for stuff to be.
What about Big Brother?
Do you suppose he could send a drone to vaporise the car of someone on the wrong side of the Thought Police???
I have a 2006 minivan that has none of those features (OnStar, GPS, etc.). It’s got 221,000+ miles on it. I want to replace it with something that gets better gas mileage. This article makes it sound like there’s nothing really out there that isn’t going to spy on me.
Ha! The joke’s on the Ulysses Group. I bought my car in Cuba and have it registered in North Korea. Here I am trying to pick up chicks with my new purchase.

About 4-5 years ago a big van type truck with all types of antenna’s on the top showed up in our area.
Finally, it was reported that this vehicle was checking on vehicle traffic as the vehicles left the homes of the drivers to the various out of town roads/highways.
A few months later the identified traffic patterns enabled the hiway planners to plan future exits/entrances on the 2 to 4 lane roads in our county leading to major highways.
No one seemed to be upset or concerned about this data gathering.
My 2004 truck does not have GPS. Reckon the truck can be tracked?
OnStar offers “free” wifi... when the product is “free”, you are the product. That said, OnStar will probably need to make a statement about their security and data reselling policies.
Edward Snowden was right again.

Loved that car. Dad bought one when I was about sixteen. Had to sell it. It would stall out at traffic lights and ‘vapor-lock’. Wouldn’t restart until the engine had cooled. Beautiful car and powerful too.

Next they’ll be installing data collection from your toilet.
