Johnson & Johnson, with the aid of President Joe Biden's administration, has been put in charge of a Baltimore vaccine production plant that ruined 15 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine and has moved to stop British drugmaker AstraZeneca Plc from utilizing the facility to avoid any future mistakes, senior federal health officials said on Saturday.
The extraordinary decision, which was first reported by The New York Times, was put into action by the US Department of Health and Human Services and will allow the Emergent BioSolutions plant to focus on making the single-dose Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.
Johnson & Johnson confirmed the move on Saturday, stating that it was "assuming full responsibility regarding the manufacturing of drug substance" at Emergent.
"Specifically, the company is adding dedicated leaders for operations and quality, and significantly increasing the number of manufacturing, quality and technical operations personnel to work with the company specialists already at Emergent," Johnson & Johnson said in a statement.
The change comes after the disclosure that Emergent, which is a manufacturing partner to both AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, mixed up ingredients from the two coronavirus vaccines in a case of human error, causing regulators to delay authorization of the facility's vaccine production.
The mixup ruined nearly 15 million Johnson & Johnson doses.
The error did not impact any vaccines that are currently being delivered or used, according to the Times report.

Oh yeah, I’m really gonna get this rush job vaccine. Everybody knows it’s best when drugs are highly politicized, made in a rush, and are experimental only. /s
C’mon everybody! Get your experimental vaccine for a virus with a 99 percent-plus survival rate!
Let me guess... Baltimore mob ...union employees... convenient “accident” after someone didn’t pay up?
Why is the only solution to kick AstraZeneca production out? How about kicking out the incompetent people in charge who never should have made the mistake in the first place?
So 15 million doses were ruined. I wonder if that was on a cost-plus contract with the government, or if the manufacturer has to absorb the loss. (On paper).
My cousins wife had the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, she is in her mid 40s, she figured J&J would be safe, she said she’s never been so sick in her life she thought she was going to die, high fever, chills, body aches, headache, the works..happened the same night she got the shot done
Very strange, I just spoke to a FReeper who never had ANY side effects after taking the J&J vaccine, he felt normal, not even soreness in the arm.
I know of two others who took the J&J vaccine who never felt any side effects too....
I guess people’s reactions to vaccine are just different.
sabotage?
Who’s to say just exactly what the concentration is in any given dose.
I guess it varies from person to person..my 34 yr old sister had Pfizer and the first dose, no reaction(other than arm pain) the 2nd shot, gave her 100.3 fever(Which was no biggie) but she was so achy she felt like she was hit by a bus, very tired..went away two days later..I have to get mine done but have to wait til April 15th here in LA County where it will be available to everyone over 16..but heck even if we all get the shot, the lying cdc changes their mind every damn second about wearing masks..f it, when Im fully vaccinated Im out, mall, etc gonna experience some real damn freedom
Hmmm. Isn’t the government determining who manages a manufacturing plant the very definition of Fascism?
“ she thought she was going to die”
Wrongly, we hope...
“ So 15 million doses were ruined. I wonder if that was on a cost-plus contract with the government”
More likely given the location it was a diversity-inclusion-equity (D-I-E) project.
They were probably given choices, this one they gladly accepted.
Have they even tested them on rats? Or they don’t need to anymore?
March 31, 2021: I don’t know how this company is still in business. Product Quality and Complaince are non-exsistent. High level management overpromises to clients then blame low level employees for not being able to deliver. The executive team does not invest in any real automation or new systems. Stay away unless you want to be a part of putting patients at serious risk.
March 3, 2021: Chaotic, keep throwing people at all the work without an effective plan to use them
February 3, 2021: terrible working hours/ expected to work nights and days -can't manage trash and waste, just hire people for it -low staff , untrained - Lack of culture, if you are a manufacturing tech you are just a pawn that they can use to make you for 80 hours a week of labor.
February 3, 2021: Too many inexperienced people. There lacks communication between departments and everyone is overworked and stretched too thin.
December 21, 2020: Since the beginning of the pandemic, everything took a nose dive. The hours are getting longer, with no respite in sight. The site is transitioning to 24/7 operations and everyone is already over-worked. There is little planning, everything happens day-to-day and is very chaotic. There are frequent mistakes by newer staff that end up costing people their nights and weekends. Only apply if you want to make this job your entire life.
