They also warned that the move could worsen the already fragile human rights situation in the easternmost region of the country, amid accusations of numerous incidents of violence.
Papua officially became a part of Indonesia in 1969, following a plebiscite in which representatives of various Papuan tribes voted in favor of joining the republic. As their votes were cast under a heavy military presence, Papuan separatists, including the Free Papua Movement (OPM), have since called for a fresh vote on self-determination, prompting military operations and retaliatory attacks against Indonesian personnel.

White man taste like chicken.
Huh. I thought they’d pretty much exterminated the natives to make room for a load of Indonesian muslims to move in...

For the Indonesians it’s personal - the world’s most populous muslim nation being dominated by a tiny crapped out Euro nation like Holland.
Neither will they long tolerate a crapped out beggar nation like England in their neighborhood.
Nom, nom, nom.
Years ago I did some work at the Grasberg Mine in Puncak Province where these rebels are. 7th largest producer of gold and 2nd largest of copper in the world. Rediscovered in 1960.
Wiki: “In 1963 the administration of Dutch New Guinea was transferred to Indonesia, and the mine was the first under the new Suharto administration’s 1967 foreign investment laws intended to attract foreign investment to Indonesia’s then ruined economy.”
Then - as your article states, Papua had an “election” on “free determination” of the area. No way Indonesia was going to give up this wealth.
The mine started producing in the early 1970’s.
When I was there we were kept from working for a week (offsite) due to “rebel activity”. Our contact at the mine said it was probably just the military saying that so they could go out and harass some of the local villages as they would do every so often.
Also from wiki regarding the “vote”:
The Act of Free Choice (Indonesian: Penentuan Pendapat Rakyat, PEPERA, Determination of the People’s Opinion) was an election held on August 2, 1969 in which 1,025 men and women selected by the Indonesian military in Western New Guinea voted unanimously in favor of Indonesian control.
Human rights workers, the other white meat.
