It’s pretty darn cruel and evil what they did.

There are humane ways of working overpopulated bear populations.

Being Florida and all, they should just cane the SOBs and put it on pay-per-view! About once a month for a year or two.

No better than the jerks who play fantasy sniper and take shots at elk from 1200 yards.

Taking an elk from 1200 yards is no more unethical than taking a running shot at an elk in the woods at 70 yards.

It all depends on knowing the limitations of yourself and your equipment.

Both involve the possibility of wounded game getting away.

In fact, all hunting involves the possibility of wounded game getting away, or it is not hunting.

Most anti-hunters want to stop all hunting. They believe hunting is bad.

Every hunter I know would be disgusted by what's being described here. This is not hunting but sadism. Using dogs to tree a bear or using bait to lure one in to then cleanly harvest it is fine. I've used bait stations to lure in bear that I then cleanly dispatched.

If these people are found guilty of what they are alleged to have done, I hope they get the book thrown at them. Unfortunately, it is this type of ugly behavior that anti-hunters use to pass anti-hunting legislation. If you think about it, you've have just done same thing that they would do - wrongly group this type of repulsive behavior as hunting.

That is exactly what I am pointing out.

Neither of us have seen the videos, nor know anything but what we have been told in the story. We do not even know how much of the story is true.

“”In fact, all hunting involves the possibility of wounded game getting away,””.

I agree Sir, but would you agree that taking 1000 and 1200 yard shots greatly increases that possibility? The round has lost a lot of it’s energy at that distance, the flight time has allowed substantial movement from the target at that distance and the bullet itself may not perform as needed at that low a velocity due to distance.

This wasn’t hunting, it was poaching.

This wasn’t hunting, it was poaching.

Poaching is mostly hunting which has been made illegal.

There generally are good reasons to make some sorts of hunting illegal, mostly because they will be used to over harvest and deplete the resource.

I agree, poaching is illegal, it can harm the resource.

This case of poaching is being used to smear hunting bears with bait or with dogs.

I recall a Wildlife Manager in the Wisconsin DNR, when I asked him what he thought about deer poaching in Wisconsin. This was about 1979, as I recall. It was a private conversation. I believe I had his confidence.

He said: "If it wasn't for the poachers, the deer population would be out of control."

I did not record it (no cell phones at the time, and no digital recorders or digital cameras) but I thought it was revealing.

It all depends on the precise circumstances. The people I have read who are interested in extreme range hunting tend to take those circumstances into account.

They use specialized equipment and cartridges which make the shots no more chancy than using a .45-70 with open sights at 200 yards.

Laser rangefinders have taken out much of the difficulty of extreme range shooting.

Not my cup'o tea, but I understand the challenges involved.

The baiting is (was?) pretty typical, but I think letting your dogs attack it is over the top. Good way to lose a dog too.

I used to hunt but never used bait or dogs. It wasn’t until learning up on their use that I came to appreciate it more. Especially using dogs to hunt for cougar - pretty amazing. Of course where I live now (Washington State) they have banned both practices. Along with trapping. Even mole traps are banned! Odd though - one can still buy rat traps at the hardware store. I guess some animals are more equal than others.

First they came for the bait bans, but I didn’t use bait so....

Several years back we were backpacking in Smoky Mountain National Park. About 3 days in, two dogs came into our camp. They had radio collars but were clearly lost and hungry.

A day later we were able to get a cell c=signal and called the owner listed on the collar.

He would meet us when we came off the trail a day later.

We found out from a ranger that the guy was a known poacher. Guess we should have just shot the dogs and left them in a hollow somewhere.

I think it would be good if the criminals were tied up, smeared with jelly and honey and left for the black bears to play with. It would so fitting.

And their dogs could gnaw on whatever was left after the bears were finished.

Throw these SOB’s in with the bears.

Strap donuts to them. Drop them off in the woods at night.
