Germany has to agreed to pay Namibia €1.1bn (£940m) to fund projects among communities affected by the Herero-Nama genocide at the start of the 20th century, in what Angela Merkel’s government says amounts to a gesture of reconciliation but not legally binding reparations.
Tens of thousands of men, women and children were shot, tortured or driven into the Kalahari desert to starve by German troops between 1904 and 1908 after the Herero and Nama tribes rebelled against colonial rule in what was then named German South West Africa and is now Namibia.
Since 2015, Germany has negotiated with the Namibian government over what it calls an attempt to “heal the wounds” of historic violence.
German foreign minister Heiko Maas on Friday welcomed the agreement. “It was, and continues to be, our aim to find a common path towards real reconciliation in the memory of the victims,” said the Social Democrat politician.
“This requires us to be unreserved and unflinching in naming the events of the German colonial period in what is now Namibia, and especially the atrocities of the period 1904 to 1908. We will from now on officially call these events what they are from a contemporary perspective: a genocide"

EVERYBODY APOLOGIZE TO EVERYBODY ELSE
AND PAY EVERYBODY ELSE A LOT OF MONEY
There are three things left out of the Guardian story:
1. The 1.1-billion Euro is spread over 30 years, so they never get more than roughly 33-million Euro a year.
2. The two chief tribes that were slaughtered in this period 120 years ago...were NOT part of the negotiation group. Both are rather sour about about being kept out of the talk.
3. Finally, the two tribes in question today...only make up 12-percent of the national population. So other tribes get the bulk of control over the cash.
All of this leading to a civil conflict? It wouldn’t surprise me in five years if a mini-war started up....over the Germans and this chunk of cash.
I honestly don’t understand how any government today (or current population) bears any responsibility for something like this. Germany was a hereditary monarchy at the time, and has since gone through several changes in regime and borders themselves.
The “white world” governments seem desperate to justify wealth transfers to non-white populations that have slid back to the Stone Age since whites left the colonies between half a century to a couple of centuries ago.
How much of that money will end up in the pockets of the kleptocrat ruling class?
95%. There will be a window dressing project or two, and a lot of padded bank accounts.
Yes...stupid white liberal/socialist/communists are experts at spreading chaos. This is a prime example!
Greasing the skids for “reparations” in the United States.
Thoughts?
The first genocide of the twentieth century . . . it preceded the Armenian genocide.
So I wouldn't think this is a reaction the wokeness that has spread everywhere it seems.
Do wonder if this will be the only payment, or only the first of many.
Both the Brits and the Germans used native troops, with a surprising number of blacks staying loyal to the Germans until they surrendered in the field at wars end.
IIRC, in the 1950s the Germans sent a group over to pay back wages to those loyal troops. A slew of them showed up, many showing scars and saying "Ich bin ein deutscher Soldat" causing a momentary problem - who were veterans and who were posers?
A stroke-of-genius guy handed each claimant a long stick and barked out the manual of arms in German. Every one who had showed up passed.
Hey Angela! Send it over here, you know, where they ended up!
In a similar manner to our own situation with “reparations”, I don’t know why successive generations accept these debts. When communists overthrew regimes around the world, the debts of their forebears died with those preceding regimes.
