100 years after Tulsa race massacre, Black residents await Biden, and reparations

Tulsa (AFP) - In Tulsa, the city that still bears the scars of a 1921 racial massacre, African-American residents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of President Joe Biden on Tuesday, hoping he will hear their call for financial reparations.

"I just want him to feel our pain," said local activist Kristi Williams.

The Democratic leader, who has benefited from a strong support base among Black voters, will attend Tuesday's commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa race massacre, one of the worst episodes of racial violence in US history.

Williams, who is descended from some of the massacre victims, wants Biden to "do us right."

Biden said Monday that "the federal government must reckon with and acknowledge the role that it has played in stripping wealth and opportunity from Black communities" such as Greenwood.

In Tulsa, this is just the beginning: residents expect further action from a president who has cautiously declared support for looking into financial reparations for Blacks.

In this city in Oklahoma, part of the previously slave-owning US south and a stronghold of the Ku Klux Klan, the effects of the massacre are still felt.

There are marked inequalities between the northern part of Tulsa, which is predominantly Black, and the south, which has mostly white residents.

Beyond financial compensation, city residents are counting on Biden's visit and the ceremony for the massacre's 100th anniversary to bring more attention to the tragedy, which has long remained taboo.

Learn from the past, live in the present, prepare for the future.

Those that are behind this are still living in the past. They need to move on.

Did we learn anything? I think we did. Has it happened since?

The Black community has received reparations from the administration of Lyndon Johnson to the present. Perhaps its time for them to pay some back.

720,000 white people were killed during the Civil War. All whites should receive reparations for their loss. The South was completely destroyed during the Civil War. Southerners should definitely get reparations for their losses that held the section back 100 years.

It is not the nation that is losing its mind, it is the agenda of the democrats to destroy the nation with stupidity.

I agree to reparations. They should come from the Democrat Party. This was the party that destroyed black businesses in Tulsa in 1921.

Just to ask a stupid question...once Sherman went to burning down cities on his march...how do the cities/states affected not get reparations now today?

The US is divided into roughly 50 mostly sovereign countries. For me, a Kentuckian to focus on this Oklahoma event as requiring some sort of change is like the French being told they need to atone for what Germany did to Jews, Gypsies, et al in the 30’s an 40’s.

Sorry, but not my cross to bear. In fact, 25 years ago Oklahoma addressed it:

“In 1996, 75 years after the massacre, a bipartisan group in the state legislature authorized the formation of the Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. The commission’s final report, published in 2001, states that the city had conspired with the mob of White citizens against Black citizens; it recommended a program of reparations to survivors and their descendants. The state passed legislation in order to establish scholarships for the descendants of survivors, encourage the economic development of Greenwood, and develop a park in memory of the victims of the massacre in Tulsa. The park was dedicated in 2010. In 2020, the massacre became a part of the Oklahoma school curriculum.

The black race baiters are becoming like the blackmailer than comes back every so often for more money.

Putting a dollar value on collective guilt, and assessing those upon which no degree of guilt applies, is bad economics and bad politics. Reparations never work, as there is a disparity between which the “victims” claim as rightful, and the willingness of those who are called upon to repay, is simply too vast to ever be reconciled, and never is compromise possible.

Some people would rather have the issue than its resolution.

They aren’t living in the past. They are using the past to get free money out of the taxpayers.

I am so sick of this. Nobody alive today participated in any of that. We are not responsible.

Ah yes, leverage for a a cash payout. And it appears puddin’ head Biden may use this to pay up.

IMO, all this excessive pandering to Blacks is a direct result of Trump who was making significant inroads in the Black vote. I believe Democrats absolutely freaked out knowing that if Republicans successfully continued to move Blacks away from the Democrat Plantation then there would be no way they could ever win a national election again. And so Democrats are doing whatever is necessary - whatever - to lash Blacks forever more to their plantation.

People of color had the lowest unemployment numbers this nation has ever seen under Trump.

Private sector jobs that enabled people to better themselves and their families.

Deep State got rid of the man responsible for that and installed a demented stooge.

And is now destroying all those gains.

Note to folks in Tulsa: During BiteMe’s parachute drop, someone should rent some of those electronic billboard on wheels trucks and drive them around Tulsa while displaying that pic of BiteMe with Sheets Byrd.

That pic is a great metaphor for what Deep State is doing to people of color.

I agree. It’s just another shakedown. It’s been addressed, just like slavery was addressed in the 1860’s with the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans.

If you were harmed by the Tulsa Race riots, you should get money, but should it be in 1921 dollars or today. Do you have proof your business was harmed? Are you 120+ years old?

“I just want him to feel our pain," said local activist Kristi Williams

Their “pain” is the loud sound of lots of money coming their way at our expense.
