Lexington Police say six people were killed in a crash Saturday afternoon on Interstate 75.

According to officials, the crash happened around 12:23 p.m. at the 104 mile marker.

Lexington police say officers were dispatched to reports of a wrong way driver. Before officers arrived, a head-on collision occurred.

Police say the driver of the wrong way vehicle, a 38-year-old woman, died at the scene.

A child in the other car was also found dead.

The 30-year-old driver of the second vehicle and three other children were taken to the hospital where they died of their injuries.

The Fayette County Coroner has not released the names of the six individuals.

A crash reconstruction unit worked the scene, and had the road shut down for hours. It re-opened just after 4:00 p.m.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Lexington Police Special Operations (Collision Reconstruction Unit) at (859) 258-3663

The investigation will tell if my speculation has any relationship to the truth.

And your point is well taken, not everyone is diligent about seat belts and car seats.

Truth will out, and it’s a sad outcome regardless of the details.

Until HiWay Departments started to prevent it with guard rails, suicidal people would ram their cars into bridge pillars.

Yeah, I did some autobahn driving. Most people don’t realize how dangerous the autobahn was back in the day. They have something like four times the fatality rate per mile that U.S. highways do. That’s a tribute to the skill of German drivers and the crashworthiness of their cars. Should be much higher. But could you buy gas at AFEES, cause if you were buying gas “on the economy” that much driving would eaten half your paycheck?

I worked for an insurance company for several years. That will make you think about increasing your survival odds by doing smart things like wearing a seat belt.

I don’t wear one all the time, it depends where I am snd what I’m doing. I am often on roads that you wouldn’t consider a goat track. Sides of mountains etc, seatbelt is iff in case I need to get out quick. I also don’t wear one in areas of high concentration of elk and moose, so I can duck when something comes up to take my head off. Seatbelts are about 50/50. It depends on the physics of the accident. It should be a personal decision. There is no one size fits all.

This accident is tragic and it involves little kids which breaks my heart every time. Overseas on tours, as an infantry guy I saw a lot. I dealt with a lot, but not the kids, I can’t handle the kids, that makes me burn so hot in surprised I didn’t self combust. Then when your government (Ottawa) tells you that you have to turn a blind eye to boys being raped, it makes you question everything.

Bit of a side rant, but there’s a silver lining. These children are with Jesus now. At least the younger ones. I don’t know what the magic age is for what cutoff age is.

I can see one wanting to vacate quickly when an elk or moose attacks. Not the usual driving situation ...

6 fatalities in this day and age of universal airbags and seat belts?

I never had a problem getting sufficient gas coupons that summer. I don't exactly remember how I did it, but it was above board. I think there was a process to be able to purchase an additional allotment.

Hard to believe that was over 40 years ago, it was one of the best summers I ever had, professionally and personally. I was the XO of a 40 man support unit, we took care of American battalions that were there for summer service practice. CO was gone half the time due to marital issues, leaving me in charge. My NCOs were great, and everybody did their jobs well. There were no discipline problems whatsoever, thanks to the town a few miles off post. The women there fell in love with my soldiers.

I made so many friends that summer, I would go back for long weekends, although it was 400 miles from home station, 5 hours each way on the autobahn.

My German was near fluent after that summer. Came in handy during the 1980 elections. My German neighbors were pleading with me to vote for Carter, they were sure Reagan would start WW3. I was able to express my support for Reagan entirely in German at the local gasthaus.

At the end of my tour, my best friend and I really confused the movers, by speaking totally in German. My friend was in uniform, that was the tip off we were Americans.

About the only vestige of the German I learned appears through what my grandchildren call me: Opa, German for grandfather. And they know, "what happens at Opa's, stays at Opa's". lol

They don’t attack very often, it’s more if you run into one.

Although, in Prince George in the late 90s two bull moose attacked and totaled a school bus. It was full of kids at the time too. No kids were hurt, but the bus was a wreck.

Wrong way drivers are a good reason to stay in the right lane when driving late at night, especially in and near cities with good highway lighting.

Because of the street and highway lights, a drunk driver doesn’t need their own vehicle’s lights to see and drive and will often forget to turn them on, which makes them almost invisible to oncoming traffic.

And even though they are impaired, they think they are going the right way and so they will usually drive in “their” right lane.

Which in reality has them coming at you in your left lane ... and often without their lights on.

By the time you see them and react, the closing speeds are often too fast to avoid the collision .

Just don’t be there. Stay on the right in your right lane.

That image clarifies it a bit.

Excessively high speed homicide/suicide is still on the table.

Sometimes even airbags and seat belts simply aren’t enough.

Tow cars collide head on while doing 70 mph makes quite a mess.

It happened locally. Guy committed suicide by driving his pickup head on into a semi. Killed the semi driver, too.

More so when one is doing 90 or 95. ½MV2 and all that implies.

Since people have started emerging from their quarantine, they are driving more recklessly than I have ever seen in my life.

Seat belts are the best safety equipment. Looking at the picture I an not sure the use of seat belts were a factor. It may be the sudden stop that killed them. Remember Dale Earhart crashed into the wall the damage to the car wasn’t all that bad? It was the sudden stop. The medical report should clarify. But in most driving, one should wear their seat belts.

The lack of signage in the Lexington area is a problem. It’s not a very congested urban area, but they never let you know where you are or how to get the heck out of there.

” Dale Earhart crashed into the wall the damage to the car wasn’t all that bad?”

Dale Earhart’s head hit the concrete wall out the driver’s window with enough force to kill him. Condition of the car a non-factor.
