Great advice especially late at night and right after bars close. I told my kids who had jobs in high school that required them to drive late at night on a local 4 lane state highway with a big median in between to stay in the right lane always after 11:00 pm.. Life saving advice, IMHO.
Darn!
“I wonder if the wrong-way driver was a drunk illegal alien? We’ve had several wrong-way driver deaths here in MN and most, if not all, have involved illegals.”
10-1 the wrong-way driver was an illegal ...
Just damn! Never had a chance......
A friend of mine was stationed in Germany back around 1972 as an enlisted man. He became good friends with his 1st Lieutenant and they spent weekends skiing the mountains and in the summer weekend bicycle trips since both were avid bicyclists......
Probably suicide by car.
Hi.
In the fwiw department, in Florida there is a “wrong way” crash every month. I 275 on the Frankenstein, to southbound approaching Tampa. Even on the Selmon Exp. go figure.
Normally at between 0100 and 0300 hrs.
Survival rates are small.
5.56mm
Why?
Most are drugs and alcohol.
Do know other than that.
5.56mm
Closing speed of 130mph at least. Not survivable by my experience as an ambulance tech. The suicide scenario hits pretty close to home, I won’t share the details.
“My guess, and it’s only a guess, the collision was at a VERY high speed.”
Speed limit of 70, you’re looking at a closure rate of 140mph assuming both were doing the speed limit.... Realistically it’s probably more than 150mph.
Earnhardt’s lower jaw impacted the steering wheel driving it back into his skull killing him. Earnhardt wore an open face helmet, no lower jaw protection. His death led to the outlawing of open face helmets and mandatory use of the HANS device. The device keeps the drivers head and neck in alignment.
“Since people have started emerging from their quarantine, they are driving more recklessly than I have ever seen in my life.”
YES!
I drive a Kenworth at work, and people have gotten dumber and more brazen in cutting off a large truck that depending on speed could take 300+ feet to stop.
I’ve also noticed an increase in ads for these ambulance chasing shysters proclaiming that you’re entitled to compensation if you’ve been involved in an accident with a big rig or commercial vehicle. 🙄
“They have something like four times the fatality rate per mile that U.S. highways do.”
Uh no they don’t.
Their roads are better maintained, their drivers go through a more extensive drivers ed than what’s found here in the states, and all their vehicles go through an annual inspection.
Per 1,000,000,000km traveled, their fatality rate is 1.74, compared to ours at 3.36.
I was quoting older statistics, back when they didn’t even require seat belts in cars! And I believe that in Germany, if the victim is not pronounced dead on the roadside, but dies in hospital, it does not count as a traffic death. Believe me, in 1970’s it was amazing how common accidents were on das Autobahn.
Sorry to correct you: you’re perfectly right with respect to the seventies and earlier, but since the early eighties, any traffic accident victim in Germany who dies within 30 days of a crash will officially be counted as a road fatality.
This “30-days-rule” is used nowadays by every single country I’m aware of, when assessing their number of traffic casualties.
