The draft bill, called the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, would remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and begin regulating and taxing it, placing federal rules on a burgeoning industry that has faced years of uncertainty. Though states would still be allowed to set their own marijuana laws, businesses and individuals in states that have legalized its use would be free for the first time to sell and consume it without the risk of federal punishment.

Stay high and not worry about what they are doing. A free joint and bag of chips of your choice for votes.
And they may have well, states are doing it anyways. And it has medical benefits.
This is a Nothing Burger. It’s not going to change or “buy” a single vote.
...remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act and begin regulating and taxing it

Cannabis is less harmful than tobacco and alcohol, two drugs that are already legal. The War on Drugs was a failure and it needs to end.
whiskey also had medicinal benefit’s. . Maybe Im wrong, but I heard marijuana was legal. But you cant buy the tax stamps.. so that mKes it illegal because the government hasnt gotten their cut...
Said that for the longest, funny some people are against weed, but tobacco and alcohol have killed way more and tobacco can give you lung cancer.
“...and would earmark new tax revenue for”
...Democratic Party front groups and to buy votes.
Inhaling a giant hit from a fattie and holding it in is probably worse than cigarettes.
UCMJ needs to be amended as well. Can’t discipline servicemembers for a substance that’s legal.
i’m surprised he didn’t say that it was the biggest threat to our ‘democracy’ since the civil war, like dear leader says about everything...
I’ll have to take your word for it. I’ve never smoked, personally. The harm is still comparable, I imagine.
“Mr. Schumer has also made no secret that he believes Democrats stand to benefit politically from embracing the legalization push, particularly with young voters.”
Maybe it is just posturing/pandering, that has little chance of passing. Maybe it will drum up some campaign contributions for him from the industry.
I think if they want to do this at the Federal level, there are a couple of Treaties that would have to be abrogated or modified.
While the states are doing it, it’s still illegal federally. In Florida, while it’s possible to get a medical marijuana card and go to a dispensary to purchase it, you are waiving your right to own a firearm. I kid you not, if you get a medical marijuana card in Florida, you are abrogating your right to self-defense because Form 4473 requires that you attest you are not an illegal user of marijuana under Federal law.
“Can’t discipline servicemembers for a substance that’s legal.”
Sure they can. Private employers do it all the time.

“regulating and taxing”
to make sure his friends in the drug cartels still have room to make a few bucks.
If the Middle East can export their opium, South America their cocaine, and China their fentanyl, why not get the U.S. and Canada in the game of damaging people?
China will not legalize it, because they are all about making their nation stronger, and this won’t do it. It will make a number of people much less motivated and satisfied with less. Stoners eating Cheetos and playing video games is a cliche for a good reason.
But China doesn’t promote people based on silly notions of identity politics, either, and they don’t get worked up about plastic straws and bags.
They are focused on strength, growth, and power, and that’s why they will surpass us. It’s really quite Nationalist of them.
It will take a strong Nationalist / Populist position on our part to compete, and we are heading in the wrong direction.
When China feels like they can get away with it, they will let every American know just who is in control.
They do not believe in God and they think of us as an inferior species, and they will treat all of us, and their own people, like livestock.
