* South Africans will not be able to apply for a gun licence on the basis that they need a firearm for self-defence, under a legislative proposal formally revived on Friday. * The secretariat says the planned legislation will demand a valid reason when applying for a firearm licence – and self defence doesn't count.
South Africans will not be allowed to own guns for self defence under a newly-revived legislative proposal.
The Civilian Secretariat for Police Service (CSP) on Friday published a call for public comment on a 2021 draft of the Firearms Control Amendment Bill in the Government Gazette. Despite a promise in that notice, it did not publish the actual contents of the draft law on its badly outdated website – but revealed in a summary that it contains an effort to restrict gun ownership that is likely to be controversial.
The draft law seeks to "provide for the applicant for a firearm [licence] to provide a valid reason for possessing a firearm", said the CSP in its description of the Bill.
It then provides "that no firearm licenses may be issued for self-defence purposes".
Years later a new draft leaked, in which self defence had been removed as a reason to own a gun. That draft never formally made it into the public domain, and the entire effort to update firearm legislation faded from public view.
The 2021 draft of the law contains numerous provisions to restrict firearms in private possession, many of which overlap with the 2015 effort, according to the CSPs summary.
If the law passes, there would be new limits on the amount of ammunition gun owners may hold, and on how many firearms hunters and sport shooters may possess.

In a country that has one of the highest violent crime rates in the world, how will banning firearms for self defense make this situation better? No doubt there would be massive non-compliance. As with gun control everywhere, the real reason a government wants you unarmed and unable to defend yourself is so they can do things to you that you would not permit them to do if you are armed.
Registration-> Confiscation-> Extermination. And guess which South African minority will end up as the ultimate target of this proposed law?
White Genocide

BEARS REPEATING:
“As with gun control everywhere, the real reason a government wants you unarmed and unable to defend yourself is so they can do things to you that you would not permit them to do if you are armed.”
What better reason to own a gun, if not for self defense?
Most of us don’t need to hunt in order to eat, but we do need to be prepared for anyone who may try to attack us.
Police can’t be everywhere, nor should they be in an ‘open’ society.
Sounds like the South African government has plans to assault the plebes and doesn’t want the plebes harming their jackbooted thugs.
Back to the Assault Machete
They just need to look to the US to see how you can control the people, primarily the patriots, without a worry of being fired at. The leftists pretty much have neutered the *main* reason for the 2nd amendment.
“SA” does not necessarily evoke “South Africa” here on FR . . . I myself thought for a second it referred to San Antonio in Texas . . .
Law? What law?
Opus?
Then it’s not a place worth living.
White South Africans have been fleeing for decades but a lot of them are returning now because the places they fled to are heading in the same direction.
That would be us.
South Africa is a one-party, marxist-style, corrupt-crony welfare state. imagine the worst American blue-city mayor, and multiply by 100.
As it is, I believe most (all?) of those who currently own assault rifles (and over there it’s the real deal, albeit with the go-fast capacity blocked) do so under “sporting purpose” regulations. Whether that’s true for, say, somebody keeping one as a farm or ranch rifle, I don’t know.
Sounds like a perfect scenario for gun imports via Namibia. Profits could be huge.
What if I just want to shoot people for fun?
So the natives will be able to assault the Europeans, take their things and kill them. That’s the intention.
They may need Claymores at this point.
Gun control exists to protect those who intend to commit heinous crimes against the populace. No other reason.
