Seemingly safe GOP incumbents under attack from right-wing
Valdostadailytimes.com ^ | 7/20/21 | Sean Murphy

Republican U.S. Sen. James Lankford would seem to have all the conservative credentials he'd need to coast to re-election in deep-red Oklahoma.

A devout Baptist, Lankford was the director of the nation’s largest Christian youth camp for more than a decade. He speaks out regularly against abortion and what he describes as excessive government spending. And his voting record in the Senate aligned with former President Donald Trump’s position nearly 90% of the time.

But like several other seemingly safe GOP incumbents, Lankford, who didn't even draw a primary opponent in 2016, finds himself under fierce attack by a challenger in his own party. The antagonist is a 29-year-old evangelical minister and political newcomer who managed to draw more than 2,000 people to a “Freedom Rally" headlined by Donald Trump's former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, at which Lankford was accused of being not conservative enough.

“When James (Lankford) certified the big lie, he joined the big lie," Jackson Lahmeyer told the raucous crowd in Norman, citing Lankford's failure to endorse Trump's false claims about the election outcome. “The 2020 presidential election — that was a stolen election and we will never, ever allow it to happen again.” The state's GOP chairman, John Bennett, has already endorsed Lahmeyer in the race.

Similar scenes are playing out in other red states where ultra right-wing challengers are tapping into anger among Republicans over Trump's election loss and coronavirus-related lockdowns. Some incumbents suddenly are scrambling to defend their right flank, heating up their own rhetoric on social media and ripping into President Joe Biden at every opportunity.

EVERY politician should be looking over their shoulder when they act in office.

When they don't see anybody there, they do what they want. When they see somebody who actually threatens their position, all of a sudden they're more cautious in their actions.

RINOs in red-safe states or districts being primaried doesn’t sound like a bad thig to me.

It’s the water. After drinking water from the Potomac for a few years, even the most doctrinaire conservative succumbs to the infection.

We have that here in Louisiana. They go to Baton Rouge as a defender of the taxpayers, then drink the water from the Mississippi River, and BAM!, they become tax and spend politicians like the rest.

There is absolutely nothing “ultra right wing” about expecting and demanding integrity of the election process.

It isn’t JUST that Lankford is a RINO. He’s a RINO from Oklahoma!

The RINO’s should ONLY come from blue states NOT red states.

Oklahoma can do much better than milquetoast limp wrist Lankford. The same with Nebraska and their two RINO senators
Benn Ass and Deb Fisher.

From now on, we should demand that ALL red state senators be 100% on the MAGA band wagon or they are OUT. I am looking at you John Hoeven, John Thune, Mike Braun, Lamar Alexander, MittStain Romney, Mike Lee etc, etc.

EVERY politician should be looking over their shoulder when they act in office.

A big reason why we're in the shape we're in is precisely because incumbants are not challenged each election cycle.

...endorse Trump's false claims about the election

This is the reason this putz is defending a Republican. Because Lankford went along for the ride rather than fight. Even now as states are warming up to detailed audits and cleaning up election laws the left continues to deny, deny, deny. Cons never give up the Con.

"Trump's false claim" is the most used lie in the media.

Langford is a backstabbing rino and I hope his primary challenger kicks his ass.

I think what happened is that Republicans were so convinced that Trump would falsely claim fraud if he ‘lost’ that it never occurred to them that maybe Trump’s claims might just have legitimacy.

...too bad, they should have been more open-minded to that possibility.

...........................................
“what he describes as”? Whenever you see a qualifying word or phrase such as this one you’re seeing an attempt by the writer to discredit the thought or action to which it refers, in this case excessive government spending.

I have been pondering that aspect for a long time, even months before the election.

I remember hearing all that talk before the election about Trump refusing to leave office, etc. and I wondered if that was part of an intentional and coordinated setup.

A purposely introduced “self-fulfilling prophecy” that was introduced for a malicious reason.

Like Pelosi, Waters, and other high level Democrats saying with such utter conviction that there was no way Trump was going to win re-election.

They knew what was going to happen. They were part of it. It was coordinated. And it worked.

Well and truly said and every word of it. The GOP’s failure to get rid of these “assistant Democrats” is why I have resolved to NEVER contribute my money to any GOP fundraising organization, including WinRed!

Lankford opposed Trump’s China policy and seemed in the pocket of the Chamber of Commerce until Corona came along:

05.10.19 Senator Lankford Statement on US-China Trade Negotiations, 25 Percent Tariff
WASHINGTON, DC – Senator James Lankford (R-OK) today issued the following statement after the Administration talks on trade with China have stalled and announced a 25 percent tariff: “The announcement from the White House that talks with China have fallen apart is not good news for American consumers. The Chinese must return to the table to negotiate in good faith to finally resolve our longstanding trade uncertainty. Tariffs are not an effective long-term strategy for either country and hurt the US economy. The 25 percent tariffs imposed on the $200 billion worth of Chinese imports will continue to harm American workers, American consumers, and American companies in the days ahead. The US must find a path with China that opens up trade, not discourages it.

BINGO! Term limits would be another way to resolve the problem.

Lankford has also been smooching BLM behind. He was on the highly corrupt Senate intel committee for years during the bipartisan coup until he suddenly resigned without explanation. He’s a bought and paid for Chamber of Chinese Commerce stooge.

I generally believe in free trade. Trading with an enemy, however , is an issue far more important.

Any GOP incumbent who denies that the 2020 election was stolen needs to go. GOP candidates should be campaigning on election audits.

True but that would require a constitutional amendment. Pretty much impossible in this political environment.
