NBC boss insists Tokyo Olympics will be 'profitable' despite massive viewership drop

NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell insisted on Thursday that NBC’s costly investment in the Tokyo Olympics will be profitable despite a massive drop in viewership that reportedly has caused "anxiety" for the network’s advertisers.

Through five days of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, NBC’s average primetime audience of 15.2 million viewers is down 47% from Rio in 2016 and 57% from London in 2012. The opening ceremony, delayed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, drew 16.7 million viewers for NBC on Friday, the smallest audience for the network broadcast since the 1988 Seoul Games.

"We had a little bit of bad luck and this drumbeat of negativity," Shell said during an earnings call with investors.

They had a little bit of bad luck with a drumbeat of political correctness negativity ... and now their viewers are down about 60 percent ... but it's not their fault ... so don't any of you right wing nuts go out and gloat over their misfortune !!

NBC is Comcast — or, Con-Cast as Trump described the bastards.

If you want to make a difference in this world, watch the Olympics as you normally would and make note of the advertisers. If a commercial advertises a product or service you normally spend money on, take a break from that product for a few months. If enough people do that, the advertisers will feel it.

Tokyo Olympics will be 'profitable' despite massive viewership drop

So every other show for the next two years will bear the accounting burden of the free make-up commercials used to refund advertisers for below guaranteed ratings.

You know the industry accounting scams! Impressive. This, plus the network can amortize the program rights cost under a multi-year deal i.e. assume more of the cost to the IOC flows to the 2024 and 2028 Games. Of course their assumption is that TV ratings will rebound for the 2024 Games in Paris and especially for the 2028 Games in LA - the Concast/NBC auditors (who are just as corrupt) will probably accept an assumption that milions more people will magically start watching TV in 7 years’ time.

I have not watched a second of the Olympics. I am not boycotting. I just have zero interest for the first time in my life.

Sociopaths like network execs lie to others—while they lie to themselves.

Hopefully the advertisers wake up and smell the stench.

Boycott—now and forever!

My sentiment exactly. I would add that I wish our PATRIOTIC athletes well but I’m not going to wade through all the woke bullshit by watching to glimpse too few pearls.

NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell huh?
Your network is a biased rag pal.
So very glad you are taking a bath in regards the poor viewership of the Olympics.
Keep backing Dementia Joe a-hole.

All these major productions (Olympics, sport, Academy Awards, etc,) that have any wokeness are bombing out badly in viewership. You would think they would get a clue.

Excellent analysis. There MUST be consequences for such a massive drop of advertisers. Huge companies who advertise expect performance — it’s in the contract.

The only place we will notice the Con Cast pain is when the annual 10K SEC report shows a big dip in the company’s profits this year. Sure enough, the narrative will bury the Tokyo story of Olympic-size losses.

Ditto!

I usually watch some swimming events and some foot races {I never watch any event where a judge gets to decide the winner}, but this year...nada.

I am not watching much TV of any kind and I don't have any remorse.

You couldn’t pay me to watch this farce.

Simone Biles. What a disgrace. A wuss. Shame on her.

Some of you might remember Shun Fujimoto (Japan) from the 1976 Olympics.

He shattered his kneecap in the opening floor exercises and kept it to himself. He performed the rest of the Olympics in unspeakable pain, culminating in his unforgettable rings routine where he scored a 9.7 helping Japan win the Gold.

Now that’s an athlete. That’s a real Olympian.

You can read more about him here: t.ly/GFZj

What’s happened to America?

Now you know how President Trump felt like when NBC bombarded him with hate with 100% anti Trump propaganda.
Suck on it NBC and die. Where are all them 80 million who NBC claims "voted for Dementia Joe" at?.
Chuckle.
