Zoom Should Go The Way Of Lockdowns: Out Of Our Daily Lives For Good
The Federalist ^ | 09/03/2021 | Gabe Kaminsky

Zoom, the software many had never heard of prior to COVID-19 and the lockdowns that followed, surged nearly 400 percent last year. But as many industries return to being in person — and competition flourishes due to other businesses offering services accompanied by other features — it took a more than 15 percent tumble on Tuesday. This is a good thing.

Amid societal decay and economic turmoil, Chinese-American billionaire Eric Yuan’s company made a killing. Although shares fell, the stock recorded an astounding $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time in its history, beating analyst estimates. But as Maria Armental of the Wall Street Journal noted, its revenue increase was nothing compared to before.

All I know is the company on the second floor where I worked reopened July 19th. Only 7 people came back and now I see nobody there at all. They are a bunch of 20 and 30 year old's that live sitting at home in their jogging pants.

Things like Zoom and Teams are good for retirees who are ok being part-time contract consultants but don’t want to live in the craphole they had to live in when they had to show up for work every day. Someone has to keep those 20 and 30 yo’s from derailing the trains before they finally grow up.

“They are a bunch of 20 and 30 year old’s that live sitting at home in their jogging pants.”

Sad to say, but it is probably safer working at home given the woke office environment.

Or, it’s good for getting rid of micromanaging useless mid level management. It depends on the job and industry.

My job has had me working from home for three years. Thankfully, we NEVER use our cameras. We have used TEAMS, ZOOM, Circuit, WebEx. Cameras off for all of us. Saves bandwidth. I have electrical tape on mine.

I disagree to some extent. In criminal cases many of the hearings are brief agreements to continue the pre-trial or simple plea hearings. We have been doing those with online zoom hearings and it has been very effective. It is very cost effective and benefits everyone involved. I would like to see this continue. Save the in court hearings for evidentiary hearings and trials.

Zoom is a joke

Teleconference before it was a Joke

I have a bunch of new famous quotes about this BS era of Zoom

“Zooms is not going to put solar panels on your house”

“Zoom is not going to rewire your electrical panel”

“I disagree to some extent.”

And also isn’t condemning Zoom for -whatever- like condemning guns for murdering?

My team requires cameras be on for team meetings and if we're in a higher level meeting and we have to speak. I make sure to comb my hair on those days.

Zoom/teams/go-to meeting/etc... Are disruptors that exposed some ugly truths about the business world.

There is a whole lot of money involved in corporate real estate that will go belly up if people realize how little of it is actually necessary.

Most large businesses operate with the presumption that layers and layers of managers, minders, and busybodies are necessary for the business to operate, and those people largely do nothing other than schedule meetings, attend meetings, make PowerPoints for meetings, and fill out spreadsheets. Their reason for existing often comes down to asking other people what they’re doing and taking time out of their day to place them in meetings.

The 40 hour work week is also getting blown up, a lot of people are realizing how little time they actually need to spend working to accomplish what they’re paid to do, and they’re seeing how the chains of management keep them at their desks.

No, zoom isn’t the problem. Zoom was a flashlight that showed the world what the problems really were.

Zoom is great for actually getting to the point of the meeting. At my office many of them are recorded so we can go over them later and recall exactly what was agreed and said. Me, being technical, I rattle off stuff as to how some things work and how they should be used that lots of the proles don’t catch first time through. It’s great in getting rid of the repeat “deliberate misunderstanders”.

After retiring, I started tutoring GED students part time at my church.

It worked very well and we had a good success rate.

Covid came and we are STILL doing zoom even though we are in Texas where everything else is in person.

Students like not having to worry about childcare or transportation, so THEY don’t want in person anymore.

The success rates are down, but we cannot convince them that zoom is the problem... Sad.

Are you a commercial real estate agent?

Many of us can do our jobs from anywhere there's an internet connection.

What I hope dies is the traditional conference call. I’ve spent so many hours on ineffective meetings with 10 people on the phone. Zoom type meetings are a huge improvement on that.

I know a few jurisdictions that have been handling the low end pretrial stuff via video conference for over a decade. It’s just way easier. Rather than getting the defendant out of jail, taking him to the courthouse, doing a 5 minute thing, then you gotta get him all the way back. Just have a room in each jail with the hookup and bang through it.

I wonder how that urban gentrification effort is going since the BLM riots? Seems to me like a lot of those 20 & 30-somethings all wanted to continue living in the cities in which they attended university. I bet a lot of them had to ‘re-think’ the wisdom of those decisions.

I agree 100%. We’ve only been doing it since Covid but it’s worked well and it should continue. I can do a 5 minute hearing from my home office and it increase my productive time considerably. Same with the Judges, prosecutors and defendants. It is also environmentally friendly as 100 people don’t have to drive to court for each slate.

Spend 90 minutes driving into the city, or log on from a hotel poolside in Cabo or Costa Rica?…

I took early retirement about 25 years ago. My joke was I only worked 20 years because I spent 5 years at least on conference calls.

One manager abused Voice mail, and I took about an hour a day listening to his b$. After I took out early retirement, the company fired this clown and several of his fellow clowns. They paid some of us good money to be focus groups telling them what was a waste of time. This clown was one of the first casualties.

One of our 50 something male, DNA sites aka a son, was recently in a severe abuse trial as the lead alternate juror. He suggested that many of the pre trial sessions could have been handled by zoom before the actual trial.

He lives about 45 minutes from the court house and finding a parking spot and walking was about an hour plus each day. Besides the actual time with the jury.
