Australia to get nuclear-powered submarines, will scrap $90b program to build French-designed subs

Australia's next submarine fleet will be nuclear-powered under an audacious plan that will see a controversial $90 billion program to build up to 12 French-designed submarines scrapped.

The ABC understands Australia will use American and British technology to configure its next submarine fleet in a bid to replace its existing Collins class subs with a boat more suitable to the deteriorating strategic environment.

Australia, the United States and Britain are expected to jointly announce a new trilateral security partnership on Thursday, with a focus on aligning technology and regional challenges.

But Australia's embrace of nuclear-powered submarines will have its political and technological challenges, given there is no domestic nuclear industry.

The new three-nation security pact – called AUKUS – will be seen by China as a bid to counter its regional influence, especially in the contested South China Sea.

The nuclear submarines would likely be based in WA.

Welp....looks like the world leaders are acting on our weakness. America is NOT going to help them. If Americans abandon their own, why would the usurper, fake, lying, demented fool help our Allies?

Anyways, I hope Austrailia goes nuclear both in subs, power plants, and nuclear armaments.

Anyways, France has a finger in its eye, Aussies win BIGLY here, and it shows how feckless and impotent we have become.

Good OSINT analysis from Mr. Jive Turkey at Sub Brief

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t British and Australian submarines have right-hand drive?

Seeing our “allies” finally start to arm themselves is a good thing. Nothing breeds hatred like dependence on others. Look at how Europe has been chaffing under NATO and hating on America, the ungrateful bastards.

If your “gang” has only one strong fighter and 20 pussies, you don’t have a gang, you have an ugly harem.

Or, given the full on totalitarian actions of the governments in AUS, and the several communist State Governors, it COULD BE an additional conduit for the CCP to get MORE info on US and UK nuclear subs. Perhaps that last 5% of the info that XiJinBiden and Generalissimo Vladimir Milley have NOT YET provided the ChiComs.

At least the Brits got rid of their subs with the screen doors. Guess who bought them, because they were cheap? (Not REALLY cheap, but the cheapest sub that a LIEBERAL government could find.) Jean Chretien, the third worst Prime Mistake that Kanadahar (Canada) ever had, and his left wing government, approved the deal! The RN certainly saw Chetien and the 'Perfumed Princes' working at 101 Col By Drive, d'Ottawa, coming!

Now Kanadahar is the 'proud' possessor of four Upholder-class submarines (screen doors still intact). The first one didn't enter RCN service until June 2005, as repairs and rigging to GouvFedCan requirements needed to be completed.

Ummm....curious how the mandated bi-lingual submarine signage and instrument read-outs work out...or am I assuming that only two languages are required?

Not a whole lot of surface area available I would imagine.

"And the air conditioning sucks…"

As it does everywhere in the Southern Hemisphere. I think it's a Coriolis thing.

British Astute class boats would be a good match for Australia. The question would be if BAE Systems could increase production to deliver the first Australian boat or two along with the British orders. I’m assuming that Australia will insist on building most of them domestically.

I’m sure the Aussies would prefer to build their own subs, but that part of the article about “deteriorating strategic environment” makes me think they may get a few “loaners” at minimum.
